Stayed there for a few nights, more modern than the Yanggakdo but less entertainment. Still quite pleasant and possibly a guaranteed stop for anyone staying in the DPRK. Golf club next door if you want to do something different.

This hotel was great! Just like staying at a Sheraton! No water issues, comfy, lots to do in the evening. Staff is super friendly and came out to wave to our tour bus:)), have to love that. I left my laundry here while we went to another city for a couple days and came back to it all clean and folded and my bed, super cheap too!

Stayed at the Sosan for my first two nights in the DPRK. The foyer is grand but with interesting little nooks and crannies to relax in. My room on the 17th floor was comfortable with the obligatory two single beds, TV (several Western channels) and air-conditioning. Bathroom was dated but everything worked. First night the air conditioner ran a bearing so I turned it off, opened the windows and discovered that mosquitos can fly as high as 17 floors up! Next morning reported the breakdown to reception and on returning in the evening found the conditioner had been fixed and worked well thereafter. Laundry was a total mystery as I had some and despite the best efforts of all concerned, it remained unwashed for the duration. Also recommend you carry a small torch as the area had a couple of power outs in the evening so the hotel lifts were out of action until supply was restored. Instead of going to my room used the time well and went for a walk in the garden and visited a few of the stalls set up there. All in all an acceptable inn.

This hotel is a little out of the city centre. It is in the sports district so it is surrounded by stadiums and sporting venues dedicated to various sports. It is the hotel where many visiting sporting teams stay because of its convenience to the venues.

It is a smart modern hotel. Spotlessly clean with good staff. There are several bars and restaurants, most of which are empty most of the time. As usual for DPRK, a special effort is made for foreign guests to have a good impression of the country. There is a large screen TV in most public spaces showing either large concerts or karaoke. The backgrounds are invariably military. The bookshop stocks some great postcards.

The rooms are large and have TVs which have access to some foreign channels. CNA, RT and I think France24 were all available. Internet in the room is also available but the fee is quite high, €4 per half hour if I remember correctly.

There are 4 slow lifts. 2 lifts serve floors 1-10 and the others serve 11 to the top (about 25) So the recommendation is to stay on the 9th, 10th or 11th floor. Then you have a choice of lift and you may have to walk one floor up or down.

There is a hairdresser, massage spa and a few other services. The hairdresser was very good and gave me a local style haircut for a great price.

The food in the breakfast room is uninspiring. Likewise all other meals I ate at the hotel were bland. They were engineered to Western tastes. As Westerners have no taste anyway, the Korean facsimilie of Western food was pretty dire. However the alcohol made up for it. The local beer is very good as is the local Pyongyang soju. Both far superior to anything to be found in the south part of the country.

Room Tip: Stay on floors 9, 10 or 11. Great views on high floors but lift slow

I stayed in the Sosan Hotel for two nights and to be honest I had very limited expectations before my stay at the hotel. The hotel is imposing and is located in Pyongyang Sports Village, the lobby is on a grand scale and similar to any hotel lobby found in other cities in the world.

My room was on the 27th floor and had excellent views of parts of Pyongyang and the surrounding area. The refurbished twin bedded room was nicely decorated with a good amount of storage space, TV with small range of international channels including Al Jazeera News Channel, there was a kettle but no teabags or coffee provided but this was not an issue. There was also a small balcony which was nice to have, and one stark difference about staying in Pyongyang is the quietness at night and devoid of any city related noise found anywhere else which was quite evident when out on the balcony.

The bathroom was fine with a reasonably sized bathtub and the shower spluttered a lot for a few minutes before springing to life. I had the buffet breakfast on one occasion which was ample with a mainly Korean selection with a few western items, also coffee, tea and juices available. I really wasn't sure what to expect at the Sosan Hotel but I was pleasantly surprised and I was impressed with the service and facilities it offered.
