Retaj Moroni Hotel
Ranked #3 of 9 Hotels in Moroni

I stayed at this hotel recently for a week, and I was very surprised by the friendliness and the hospitality of the staff. The hotel has one of the best location in Moroni, with a very green vegetation and landscaping, and close to the business area. The new management seems to cater a lot for the comfort of the guests, and really make you feel at home. WIFI is free and is available in most port of the building, the buffet price during week-end is the best value for money on the island, and is very famous too. I will definitely travel back to Comoros, and will stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room on the first floor, there is a beautiful sunset

The hotel has a very nice location. Despite its nice location and the hotel being situated close to the ocean and has nice green surroundings, the garbage, the smell takes this place down, down, down. The place has been rebranded Retaj Sports and leisure resort. That is at best an exageration. A part a swimming pool and a so called golf course there are NO, absolutely NO sports facilities. For the leisure part, nothing much as well. The hotel has restaurant service and TV in the room. This place is a no alcohol place and not much fun at all. Rooms are clean but are starting to have a used look. No wonder, it is very likely that nothing much has been done to the rooms for a very, very long time. Internet connection exists in theory but is frequently down for all kind of odd reasons including almost every time the IT person is gone. There is electricity almost all the time. Water is luke warm rather than hot. The restaurant offers the same menu it has offered for as long as one remember back in time. Service goes from very good to not good at all, it all depends on the different persons. Some are very good, some are not. Did I mention the price: a ridiculous amount for the service offered. The good news is that they now accept Visa, when there is a connection (don't wait till the last minute to pay you never know). So overall: this place is poor and worsening. The new management of the hotel has nice words but it seems to stop there. It's a pity as this could actually be a very nice place but some serious work needs to be done. Get back the beers, get back a decent chef, refurbish the rooms, sort out the internet and, if managent does insist on calling this place a SPORT RESORT, then do provide a sports faciliity - at least a decent Gym! Unfortunately this place is probably one of 2-3 accomodation of some standard option in the Country. Monopolies are bad, bad things. Oligopolies are also bad, bad, bad things and this is what this is about: no incentives to improve, to make things better, nicer, less costly.

Room Tip: They are all the same but ask for a room that is as far as possible from the restaurant as they are...

For all Comorian places I am writing about, it is the same story. You are in Comoros. Never forget.
A clean decent room and eatable food are more than enough.
This hotel has some advantages.
Near to the city center. Almost spatious rooms. Very clean rooms. Very friendly and helpful staff. Recently the Food is improving and becoming the best in Comoros. Internet free of charge. Nice pool. Nice garden and beach (forget about swimming). Cheaper than Itsandra.
Disadvantages.
Rooms furniture is minimal. Bathrooms need maintenance. Far from aurport. In some rooms you have no WiFi coverage. Some food, especially pizza, very heavy. Buffet is almost large but no good quality. I discourage fom ordering pizza and taking buffet.

About the only decent hotel in Moroni. The room was quite spacious, but very basic, including the bathroom. Room was facing the ocean, so the view was quite nice. Food at the only hotel restaurant was awful, although later at night, pizza was available. No other choice, but to stay at this hotel as it was the closest to the town center. I didn't think they even accepted credit cards, so paid for my room in cash. Not good value for the room, the equivalent of EUR90.

Hotel staff is friendly but room is in bad shape. Stayed only 2 nights but for 75 euros it is not value for money. Itsandra looks better but i believe is around 130 euro per night.

The Retaj Moroni is perhaps the only clean and quiet hotel in Moroni, with 24 hour electricicty (unlike lower-priced establishments), running water most of the time and internet connection 12/24. As noted by other travellers the hotel is alcohol-free, but arrangements with taxi drivers can help stock up your mini-bar. The restaurant gets boring after a few days (you can overdose on lobster) and the service is very slow, but no tummy troubles after 5 weeks in residence. Good breakfat buffet (ne extra charge). Get to know the chef (Algerian), it helps. Management is Egyptian and still learning how to run a hotel ... clearly oriented to middle-eastern rather than western visitors. Published prices are just a guide ... depending on length of stay you can negotiate down to around €60.
But, all things said, unless you are staying with friends there is no better price/quality accommodation in Moroni. The Itsandra Beach is ludicrously overpriced and even though they have beer it is grudgingly delivered at €6 per can (Heineken). The Karthala is quite a way out of town and not easily taxi accessible (especially in the evenings). Other "hotels" are more down-market: if you can put up with the "traffic" the Arcades is ok, for a short stay, as is the Jardin de la Paix (one grade above backpacker but tolerable). The previously ok Villa Jessica no longer serves food in the evenings (formerly its main attraction). To chill-out the Itsandra Plage/Plongée is the place to go for a sunset aperitif and excellent food in the evenings (reservations needed at weekends). Otherwise try the Select (near all the banks and the museum, but avoid Friday nights if karaoke is not your thing).

Room Tip: If you really need internet, ask for a room close to the wifi access points ... reception drops off...

First of all the hotel has been renamed by new Qatari management in Retaj Hotel.
No alcohol and local female company is now allowed. Unfortunately the new management did not invest much in the hotel and service, cuisine as well as design remains quite amateurish.
Despite that this hotel remains the best option for those who come in Moroni on business. It has reasonable ratio of price/quality, acceptable food and is well situated. If you miss alcohol, pay less then 1 euro for a seat in a collective taxi and go to Itsandra Plongée restaurant situated on the Itsandra public beach (very nice food too, not to confuse with Itsandra Beach Hotel).
The hotel is on the sea side; and though there is no beach, when the sea is calm you can use a sort of a concrete jetty to get to the water and swim.
