Let's face it French Polynesia is not cheap but if you want reasonably priced freshly cooked food including great fish and you want to mix with the locals then be sure to stop here. We paid around 1300 Francs for our main course which was probably less than half the cost of our Hotel's dinner. The majority of the food vans are selling chinese cuisine but several of them do fresh fish and we also saw a pig roast one night. It's very rustic but fun! The fish was so good we went back a second night. Expect to use cash. One thing I would really warn you about is the Mosquito's, they are not just attracted to this location but if you sit out at night anywhere in Tahiti expect to be bitten unless you wear insect repellent.

Every evening around 6pm the roulottes (mobile food vans) park next to the Tourist Information centre on the waterfront in Papeete. They set up trestle tables with menus and there is waitress servicen which I was very surprised at. I was expecting to wait in a line and be given food to go.
There is a huge spit roasting a whole veal at one stall, served with a stack of french fries, a bowl of hot Roquefort sauce and a basket of fresh baguettes. Other stalls serve steak et frites, burgers, salads and lots of chinese stir fry dishes as well as crepes, galettes and ice cream. Go for the experience and the atmosphere rather than the quality of the food, although there's nothing wrong with it. We paid around $16 each including a bottle of water. A memorable evening out!

There are several areas we found food trucks, but the most are at the docks. 8 trucks were there the second time we ate. You get huge portions and we ended up taking a bunch back to the hotel and eating it the next day. The owner sat with us and talked. She said most of her clients are locals and that she doesn't get much traffic from the cruise ships, which is understandable because most people are leary of eating food from trucks, especially in a foreign country. We are more brave than most. I highly recommend the Poisson Cru. My wife opted for the Asian pork meal.

I was in Papeete this past October and heard about the trucks from a fellow cruise passenger. The park, where they set up, was just off the bow of the ship. Very handy! There were lots of different cuisines, spread across a dozen or so trucks, and it ALL looked great. I selected the crepes. A ham, gruyere and egg crepe with a chocolate crepe for dessert. The menu was in English and French, making it easy to order....but, with soooo many crepe choices, it was difficult to choose! After a day of walking around the city, it was a great way to sit, watch people and eat delicious food.

It´s a place where everyone can come to eat. It´s not very expensive and people are nice (chefs, waiters).
You'll find chinese cuisine, crepes, steak, chicken or fish with fries, rice... desserts... Etc
