“A bit disappointing.”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

The Pomare family ruled Tahiti and the surrounding islands for almost a hundred years, from unification of the islands in 1788 to France’s acquisition in 1880. Forced to abdicate, Pomare V died from alcoholism and is buried in a coral-decorated tomb located by the ocean. Evidently the remains of Queen Pomare IV were exhumed to make room for the last in the dynasty to rest here.

This was a bit of a disappointment for a couple reasons. First, I found it almost impossible to find and spent almost half an hour traveling back and forth on the main island road before I saw the sign to turn. Second, there is nothing of note here aside from the tomb itself. Most other places I saw in Tahiti (including a rarely visited Pomare cemetery down the road from this) had at least a brief explanation of the site and history behind it.

The craftsmanship of the tomb was good enough, but the effort and time expended to appreciate it was not worth the effort. More frustration than appreciation with this one…

“Great place for a picnic!”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

The tomb itself was interesting, made of coral. Lovely view of the sea and a cool breeze- we had a delightful picnic under a shade tree overlooking the beach.
