Keikahanui Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Nuku Hiva
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 17, 2014

For those who want a South Seas alternative to a bungalow over the water, try the Pearl Lodge in Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands. The tours are what makes this place special: the lush valley where Herman Melville was inspired to write "Typee" or the idyllic bay that charmed Robert Louis Stevenson. And you won't find finer accommodations in Nuku Hiva that the Pearl Lodge. Everything - rooms, food, service - is all 1st class. But try negotiating for water. It comes with breakfast but you'll pay the equivalent of U.S. $5 for a small bottle during lunch or dinner. Tell them no one else in the world does this.

Room Tip: Be sure you get a cottage overlooking the bay.

Very nice place with fantastic view of the bay. People are very nice and friendly. Nathalie, the hotel manager is very friendly and talks to everybody. Makes the guests feel very at home.

However, the service at the restaurant wss very slow. It took us more than hour to have our meal got served one evening.

And there is always an additional charge for the side dish. LIke if you order for a fried fish, they will ask what kind of side dish you like. If you say salade, then they charge you the salade. Otherwise, you get your fish without any side dish. It is my first time to see a restaurant serving a menu with an additional charged side dish.

The overhead light is too bright in the two rooms we had. The second room we got, its aircon was not functioning.

Lovely hotel on slope overlooking the bay. Rooms large and attractive in local style. A large and spacious balcony. Food is of a good quality if a little pricey. Pool is small but at least it is cooling and pleasant to sit by. Well kept gardens with tropical flowers. Not many guests. Reception staff very helpful and accommodating. Only place to stay in Nuka Hiva that is of a standard commensurate with the prices.

Room Tip: All bungalows are identical. Choose one with a good view and not too distant from the dining/pool a...

The Keikahanui Lodge is a very well run and maintained hotel with beautiful views of the bay below, and well-organized to help you take the best excursions on the island. They're also very flexible, and helped us change our excursions last-minute based on the weather conditions (which changed quickly and frequently). If you visit the Marquesas islands, you can't miss Nuku Hiva, and this is a good hotel with a lot of ambiance. The service was very professional and friendly, both at reception and in the restaurant. We found the food at the sister hotel on Hiva Oa to be a bit better, but we enjoyed this one too (maybe the portions are too big, though). I would be careful to not visit the Marquesas during the rainy season (July-August). We were there in late May, and it was already quite wet. It would be a shame to miss the excursions due to a lot of wet weather, because you definitely need to get out and about to visit the island. Don't stay stuck in the village where the hotel is!

We just got home after spending two fabulous days in this small, "treehouse" paradise! We went there with our 10 year old daughter. I have wanted to visit the Marquesas for years, and I wasn't disappointed. The island is truly breathtaking and one of the most beautiful places I have ever been on the planet. The Pearl Lodge was absolutely lovely, charming, fantastic service. Our bungalow was very sweet - adorned in flowers. The balcony looks over the bay, we could hear the waves crashing on the shore below, which we loved, and it was truly my favorite part of our two week trip. The food portions at the hotel are very large, so we found it better to share dishes. I really cannot recommend this place enough. At least for us, and what we were looking for and expecting on this remote island, it exceeded our expectations.

We spent five days at the Pearl Lodge on Nuku Hiva and felt the experience was very similar to the Pearl Lodge on Hiva Oa. It is a well run resort with very good food and a nice pool with a fantastic view of the entire bay. If you visit this island, this is definitely the place to stay. The bungalows are very comfortable although mosquitoes were a problem for us. The breakfast buffet was great and we had several dinners on the terrace that we really enjoyed.
