Owner description: Archaeological findings dating back 3500 years as well as cultural objects reflecting Fiji's inhabitants during the past 100 years are housed in the oldest museum in the South Pacific.

The collection is oddly structured. The entrance has some interesting wooden sailing craft which look large until you consider sailing around the Pacific in a storm.

You then need to walk THROUGH the gift shop to find the rest of the collection. There is an interesting history section which covers Fiji's early history and how it gradually came together as one country.

Upstairs toward the front covers the history of the Indian indentured workers that British hired with promises of good pay and conditions. They had to work five years to repay their passage and a further five years in order to return home.

Thought it interesting but could have been better presented

I was doing research and the receptionist , "Niga" and Mareh the Librarian went out of their way, and above and beyond the call of duty!
The museum itself was a nice, informative hour-and-half.
Cool canoes!

Do not expect to visit much there. I thought that it needed more improvement on the way they portray the Fijian culture.

Some very interesting displays but appears historical displays may deteriorate due to lack of funding.
I would recommend all to visit and maybe donate a little extra at the door.

Nice walk in Thurston gardens to get to the museum. Enough to see to give an appreciation of Fijian history and air conditioning in the shop provided good relief from the humidity.
