Reviewed December 12, 2013

We stayed there 2 nights in october 2013. Very comfortable cabin. Pretty beach. Restaurant ok. No other food services near unless you have a car. Breakfast included. The price of accomodations were quite reasonable. For some reason cheaper through booking agent than when reserve direct. I would go back again.

I stayed at Tambua for 3 nights.
Our room was nice, simple and a beautiful view of the ocean.
The staff were great, typical of Fiji, everyone was very friendly.
There is no airconditiong in the rooms and it was a little warm at times, however there is a celing fan in the room.
The food at the restaraunt was really nice and well priced.
We did find the the resort was very quiet and not much going on in the evenings. However we did travel outside of peak times.
Next time I go back, I will be happy to stay back at Tambua Sands.

Room Tip: Ask for one with an ocean view.

The resort is very nice and quiet ....great place to relax and unwind...no televisions or telephones... great water views and beaches. Kayaking and snorkelling is great too. We drove to the closest town for either lunch or dinner.... it was wonderful.

Room Tip: water front bures are great.

It was a lovely stay. I enjoy my time there with my friends and I could finally relax. The food was high leveled and it was a pleasure every time go for dinner. After several months of hard work Sambua is the perfect location to chill out, away from cities and a good opportunity to stay on your own. Thanks for everthing

The brochure shows upgraded rooms, but what we got was run down, worn out room, no TV, nothing, the whole resort has seen better days. The staff are wonderful, food is terrible and overpriced with a very limited menu. The Warwick have taken over this resort so they might spend some money doing it up. The positive is its in a lovely location, it's a very quiet resort and if you just want to relax with little to do then this will suit.

Room Tip: Get the upgraded rooms shown on the brochure...

We stayed here for two nights only, after having originally booked for four in a regular beachfront bure. When we arrived at the property, we looked at both the room we had booked (beachfront bure) and one of their new upgraded beachfront bures that has "A/C" and a private pool on your front patio. The regular beachfront bure was so stiflingly hot (it was 31C, average temp for Fiji, but very hot inside the bure) that we decided there was no way we could sleep in there and we would upgrade to the aircon room. The resort then asked for an additional $200 FJD per night (original beachfront bure cost was $135, so the upgrade took it up to $335 FJD per night). When I had previously emailed to ask about this cost, they had said just $150 to upgrade. They then said this wasn't valid when I was at the resort. They made me pay all 4 nights in a regular room and then just upgrades for each night in the new room. I paid the first night and then left after the second so didn't pay anymore (but this worked out to $740 FJD for two nights stay).

At any rate, we stayed two nights in the upgraded beachfront bure at a rate comparable to what the Sheraton or Westin would charge you on Denerau Island. I thought this was atrocious as it is still a 2 star resort throughout the rest of it. All the staff were however very friendly, always saying bula and were helpful when I realized I'd left my wallet in Sigatoka town at a store - they called for me and found out they still had it at the store! How lucky and a testament to the friendliness of Fijians that I got it back with money intact.

The restaurant food was not very good and the 'specials' did not change between days - always pizza. We had read about this and bought some groceries and alcohol at duty free to bring with us to save a few $ since it wasn't anything to write home about anyway. Entertainment each night was the same band with the same songs. Only about five rooms filled when we were here, so at best we had 3-4 other people in the restaurant with us, most of whom went straight back to their rooms after dinner, so nothing exciting happening at night at all. We got bored so checked out early. Also by the end of the trip I felt that the staff were just looking for ways to get more money from us, and it kind of ruined the 'friendliness'. (ex. $5 per frog on a frog race - thought, what the heck, it's something actually happening in the evening, so we went for it, $5 each - was sort of fun. Then ten minutes later as we're back at our table enjoying our drinks, the same guy comes back and says, OK new game, $4 each for this. We said, no thank you, we'll pass, join in later if we want. He says, oh, but people are waiting. Are you in or out? We said, we'll pass, thanks. He comes back again five min later and asks us again.)
After that, one of the other staff who did a 'special kava ceremony' for us due to it being our anniversary (he offered), we gave him $25 to go get the kava (it only cost $20 so $5 for doing it for us), he then brought the band with him to the ceremony, which was fun, however then asked us to tip the band afterward. We said we would later when we came up for dinner (we had had $20 in our pocket to give them but didn't know who to give it to or when). At dinner, he comes up to us again, and tells my husband that he should go and tip the band now! We'll tip when and how we like, thank you!

The beach was nice, the snorkelling would be great but it's so shallow and there's nowhere to stand up so you can't really go too far out as you have to float the whole time amongst tons of coral! There's lots to see (and you can see from the free kayak through the clear clear water to the fish and coral), but you really have to go at high tide (8am or 8pm roughly, while we were there, not ideal times for snorkelling).

Breakfast was continental, included, same thing every day, a bit boring. Coffee was very good though!

All in all, it's definitely a two star resort, which I knew, but I guess having to upgrade to that suite just to get it cool enough to sleep at night, and being forced to pay 4-5 star prices to get that, I found it a bit overpriced for what you got. Once they have upgraded ALL of the rooms as well as their restaurant and entertainment and grounds, it might be worth those prices, as the location is great.

Too far to walk anywhere though so local bus (we didn't try it but saw it drive by) or rental car are your only options to go into town!

Room Tip: The beachfront bures have great views, and are cheap. No aircon and pretty hot at night though. I fo...
