Let me start by saying that Mango Bay has an amazing staff. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have enjoyed our stay nearly as much and probably would have left. We had so much fun with them and they made Mango Bay a much better place to stay and our trip to Fiji much more memorable. Joe and Illy were AMAZING and we wish that they were part of our daily lives!
After a couple of days there, we felt a little trapped/stranded and left for a couple of days. Those days gone made us realize that Mango Bay really is a great place and we returned. Most places in Fiji are fairly secluded which we didn't realize when we decided to leave MB. The amount of people staying at MB really affect your experience there. When there were more people, we had a better experience because there were more people to do activities and you weren't stuck with the same small group of people all the time.
This definitely can become a party resort in a fun not too over the top way. I wouldn't take kids here. The other guests wouldn't appreciate it too much if you did since most are fairly young and ready to have a good time. We stayed in a bure and loved it. What we didn't love is that it was closest to the bar/restaurant/blaring music (Bura 7) so it was a bit annoying especially when the music played until 2-3am. Try to stay in one farthest from the restaurant.
The one thing that irked us is that the water sports were not run well. We tried to go fishing only to be told about 11 pm the night before that there weren't enough people to go and we were offered no alternative. The rest of the trip, the boat was rented out by the same group for fishing and we never got to go out. The owner is in charge of this and he was often hard to track down and not very accommodating.
The biggest complaint that I have is that their liquor selection is pretty terrible. They only had the most bottom shelf of bottom shelf liquor to sell. For beer, they had Fiji Bitter and Gold and Heineken. Their rum was good(local) if you like rum. I like to drink, but I'm not going to drink just anything that gets me drunk as a lot of their clientele did. I would recommend that you buy your own liquor (especially vodka, whiskey, tequila) in duty free if you plan to drink good liquor while you're there.
I would definitely recommend Mango Bay to people going to Fiji. I would also recommend that they travel to other islands. The driver we hired through MB was great and was basically a tour guide after he picked us up from the airport. MB can help arrange transfers around the island. One word of advice: If you go, DO NOT go on a horseback ride. The horses are not in good shape. It definitely will disappoint.
