What a great way to travel through the jungle, just be careful not to sit on the right side of the train or you will be constantly slapped with the vegetation....if you go on a school day you will visit a kindy but we went on the weekend and the children come out of their houses and run along beside the train, I know this sounds dangerous but they are obviously used to doing this.....and are encouraged by tourists throwing sweets out to them.....all in all a very good trip....ps...bring some wet wipes as the seats on the train were really dirty....reminded me of travelling to Brisbane on the old trains with the soot on the seats!!

This was a fun little train ride, to see a bit of the Fiji countryside, forest and beautiful ocean coast, while enjoying a ride on a slow, rustic, fun little old sugar cane train. The train goes thru some residential areas, and stops at a traditional Fijian village, with a guided walking tour of the village and culture discussions, by a local. Another short stop takes you down into an old cave, to hear more stories of old Fijian tribal life and ancient customs. You also pass an elementary school (a tradition to throw wrapped hard candies to the kids, as the train passes by and the kids excitedly follow the train), and a new beach side luxury golf course, as well as passing by hidden inaccessible pristine beaches. Sometimes the train slows for horses and cows, so it is a relaxing, enjoyable exposure to a bit of life in Fiji. The train stops at the end of the line, at Natadola Beach, where our lunch was included in the train price, at the old Spanish style restaurant and small hotel resort there. After lunch, we had about an hour of free time to swim at the beautiful white sand Natadola Beach, before the train began it’s return trip. We were staying nearby at the Fiji Outrigger on the Lagoon resort, perhaps about 20-30 minutes by taxi, and enjoyed this partial day excursion from that hotel.

Any train enthusiast must do this trip. I first saw the rail track in one of Sigatoka's main streets & thought it was some sort of abandoned rail line. Several days later I discover that a train actually runs on it! So lucky I had the time to do a one way trip from Sigatoka back to the depot at Shangrila resort - some 20 kms and 1&1/2 hours or so later. I couldn't believe watching us go in reverse just out of town and the line disappeared into the water!! No problem for this tough little ex sugar-cane loco. Watching young kids chase the slow chugging train was the highlight, not to mention the jungle scenery, plantations, small villages, overgrown vegetation crashing into the train and last but not least the train following horse & rider along the line!! A great experience and fun thing to do.

This was such a wonderful experience. A gorgeous little 'thomas the tank engine' style, very slow little train that wound it's way through dense jungle, stopping to shoo cows off the line and remove fallen tree limbs! The highlight is seeing all the children waiting to watch the train pass and catch the lollies thrown by the tourists. The train stops at a little kindergarten for about 15 mins and the children sing half a dozen songs very enthusiastically! They are an absolute delight. The trip in to Sigatoka takes about 1 1/2 hours but is really worth it. You can do the return trip but we caught a taxi home. Please do this trip and remember to take plenty of lollies for the kids.
