We went to Fiji at the beginning of September and chose this hotel based on the facilities for our children. They are 4 & 6, and my husband and I wanted to spend time by ourselves, as well as have some fun with the children. We stayed in a bure, which I'd definitely recommend as it gives an extra outside space for the kids to play. My son loved swinging in the hammock, which he did all day long. The bures were very clean and nicely decorated. The only fault I can find is the very narrow bath/shower area, which was strange to me as the rest of the bathroom was an ample size. and there was plenty of room for a wider bath.
The kids club was fantastic - very enthusiastic and imaginative staff - and they even took the children for meals at lunch and dinner so we could have a civilised meal in peace later on. There was even a special area for kids to hang out at breakfast to watch movies and draw, with a minder included, once they'd got tired of sitting at the table with Mum and Dad.
There were so many other wonderful touches at the Outrigger, from smoothies in shot glasses at breakfast, and fresh juices made to order, to the Butler service in the bures, bringing canapes and champagne to our room every evening.
We had a meal plan, and would do that again. The buffets at night were delicious and imaginative. My husband loved the Indian curry night, while I thought the local night was fantastic with beautiful salads. We didn't eat at Ivi, which wasn't covered by the meal plan, but other guests told us it was excellent and reasonably priced.
The grounds are immaculate and I didn't even mind the beach some others have complained about. We didn't go swimming when whenever we went there the tide was too low and there is so much broken coral, but I took my dive booties and explored the rock pools. We found a lot of interesting marine life in them.
The only complaint I would say with our stay, was the pool was too cold. Being the end of winter the weather was quite windy and only reached 27 and 28 each day, which of course was no fault of the hotel, but perhaps the heating could have been cranked up a bit in the pool? My children were freezing in it and their teeth were rattling whenever they got out, and they couldn't stay in their for long. Sadly, I never got in past my waist, which was disappointing.
My tip is to take some sort of travel line as there is nothing to hang your wet swimmers on. And also the shops on either side of the resort sell cheaper beer and its good to get out of the resort and see some of the surrounds.
This was our second trip to Fiji and we will definitely be going back again. Thank you to the Outrigger and all its beautiful staff!
