“Service with a big S”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

From the minute you arrive to the wave "Bye Bye", the service cannot be faulted. We did have a problem with maintenance noise but this was dealt with instantly. The resort is spacious and restful.
TV reception isn't too good and could do with an update to maintain a 5 star rating. Food prices are not cheap by any means but the quality is good.
We did enjoy our stay and made use of the snorkels and the kayaks both if which were easy to arrange and fun.

Room Tip: If your budget allows it, choose a sea fronting Bure, otherwise a room as high as possible to enjoy...

Great place to stay with children. Quiet and relaxing. We have travelled many places overseas with our two young children and we used the Nanny service and kids club at The Outrigger. It was the only place that we have felt fully comfortable leaving our children. The Nanny service was fantastic and our 3 year old was a little nervous at the kids club being so young so our Nanny that was with the 1 year old was happy to take both children to the kids club activities. Spa was excellent and the restaurant at the beach was great, especially as an alternative for breakfast.

Lovely resort - but it needs significant updates / renovations. The dinner packages are just ok and kinda pricey - entertainment is good but food variety and quality could be better. What made this place special for our family was the level of service. Examples include .....Moses helped us track down a charger for our US cellphones, the breakfast cafe folks knew all our names on day 2 and welcomed us joyfully each day. Everyone was happy to see us and made us feel special. We were only there for 3 days as we were going to another resort but we could have stayed longer. The pool, kids club ( baby frogs everywhere!), neighboring EcoPark ( a must do) were fun activities. But don't go to his place for the beach ---- it's nonexistent! The grounds were lovely tho !!

Room Tip: Get ready for a walk if u stay in main building vs individual bure.

This was the first time my wife and I had been to Fiji, so apart from studying the Lonely Planet Guide and previousTrip Advisor reviews we had no idea what to expect. We were very impressed. On check-in we appeared to have mistakenly booked a room with single beds, but we wanted a double, so the room was immediately changed without any problem at all. We were then presented with a complimentary refreshing cool towel and a glass of iced tea.
The best thing about this hotel was the staff. They could not have been nicer, more welcoming, more charming or more friendly. And nothing was ever too much trouble for them. They were always willing and wanting to please. We found this a typical trait of the Fijian people.
We were there the first week of February so all the European and Australian kids were still at school - and this was a relief. We had come for a bit of R&R and needed peace and quiet to help recharge our batteries. We understand that the hotel can be a bit frenetic when all the kids are there.
The first day we arrived there was an earthquake in the Solomon Islands and there was a threatened tsunami of some 30 meters high and travelling at very high speeds. The hotel immediately issued warnings to all the residents and got us to assemble at a high point in the hotel. There we stayed for 3 hours while the staff sang traditional Fijian songs to us. In the end the tsuanmi fizzled out to something pretty innocuous. But it could have been more serious and the hotel managed the potential emregency very professionally and without panic.
If I have to find something to gripe about it was the fact that we had to pay for use of the internet. Considering the price we had paid for the holiday I thought that was a bit of a cheek. I would also say that the food and drinks were pretty expensive. There were a lot of very good restaurants in the hotel so there was plenty of choice, but they were not cheap.
Interestingly, we had been told to take plenty of anti-mosquito spray. In the whole week we were there, we did not see or feel one single mosquito.
The pool was fabulous, but the Fijian beaches were generally a bit of a disapppointment as there was a lot of sharp coral on the sands - a relic of the cyclone they had had earlier in 2012. The tours are well worth doing - especially the River Safari and the trip to Robinson Crusoe Island.
In summary, a great island, a superb hotel, lovely people and all-in-all a wonderful holiday.

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor overlooking the bures and with a sea view. Wonderful.

We just got back from 7 nights at the Outrigger in Sigatoka, Fiji.
It was lovely! We had booked the Plantation Bure but on check-in were offered an upgrade to an OceanView Bure for an additional $70FJD per night, or an Oceanfront Bure for an additional $140 FJD per night, probably because it was low season. WELL WORTH IT!
Although the plantation bures looked lovely (and are apparently the same internally as the other bures), the oceanfront location can't be beat. Our bure opened up to a grassy area (with sunlounges and a hammock) with the sandy beach just below.
The service was great. The Talai butler service (comes with the bures) was an excellent touch. Every evening we had champagne and a canape between 5-6.30pm. Our Talais, Zak and Lusia, came back later if we missed them, or we could book them to come at a particular time. Turn down service while we were at dinner and then the Talai brought a "nightcap" a bit later - a liqueur with a small, petit-four style dessert.
The hotel restaurants were fine, if a little overpriced. Generally the prices were similar to eating out casually in Sydney. We tried them all. Vale ni Vakanua for buffets in the evening was a little overpriced (about $68FJD pp) but there was plenty of variety and the food was good - worthwhile going to for the Fijian meke night. Ivi was a lovely fine-dining restaurant, if not particularly inventive. The Sundowner and Baravi bars/cafes were basic but good. The KaloKalo bar was a bit more interesting, food wise, but is really only for bar snacks or high tea.
One night we ventured out of the hotel and went to the restaurant down the road at the Bedarra Beach Inn. THAT was fantastic - inventive, great food and very reasonably priced. We would have loved to go again but ran out of time.
We mainly stayed at the resort during the day because we wanted a relaxing holiday, rather than a running-around touristy stay. It's worthwhile doing some of the resort activities offered. The staff at the resort come from the local villages and we visited one, Malevu. It was a simple visit but very pleasant, and better value than spending considerably more time and money on a day trip. Had a look around Sigatoka for a couple of hours and bought a lovely (excellent value) yellow pearl pendant. We participated in the resort activities such as kava cermonies, frog and crab racing, "coconut bowling" (like boules) and won a day trip to Tivua Island with Captain Cook cruises, which was nice (if very rainy) - so pleased we won that early on in the week so we had time to book the trip!
We will definitely be back.

Only downsides:
The Bebe spa had a nice setting but lacked the 5 star touches. The towels were very worn out, the music was not great (generic, repetitive, skipping CD etc) - if they had used local music it would have been more special.
Don't drink the Fijian tap water! We forgot one night towards the end and my husband got really sick.

Room Tip: Don't bother with the hotel rooms. The bures make this a 5 star resort. All the bures have the s...

If you don't mind whiny kids allowed to scream by poorly disciplined parents this place is okay. Staff are not helpful- no late checkout despite being told place was not busy. Housekeeping very late and left dirty towels on floor. Construction started at 7:30 and went on all day. Pluses were great staff in the spa and the activity presenters. But all the noise and unruly kids did not make for a relaxing stay. Glad to have left after only two nights.

This hotel couldn't be a worse value. I booked 3 nights but checked out after only one.

Initially we were annoyed that their claim of "free internet actually meant $4 per hour for wobbly (and often down) WiFi. After they made me (not them) call Sydney, AU (what?) for "tech support", I gave up on the Internet all together.

Then the rooms -- oh my lord. 5 star? 4 star? Try 2.5. The room decor is so dilapidated and old school thay it belongs in an 80s Booze Cruise brochure. There was no tub only a weird and badly tiled shower with water that, check this, never gets beyond luke warm. Cold shower? Check.

After being kept up until nearly midnight by the pool's DJ who was blasting booze cruise oldies but lousies we ordered room service. Some of the food was good but some arrived cold and not as advertised.

The next morning it was kid hell at the pool and their poolside dress code at breakfast is so strict that they wouldn't let me eat in swim trunks and a t-shirt. Pants dress code in Fiji poolside breakfast bar? Check.

We checked out and went to the Intercontinental.

Obviously we are disappointed with your review!
We have also referred your review to Trip Advisor. Readers of this column need to be aware that this person was excluded from the resort for both unacceptable behavior and also exposing himself in the breakfast dining room. We have also advised this person’s travel agent of his disgusting actions.
We would prefer that people of your character do not come to Fiji!
