Getting to Takalana was an adventure in itself. Takalana is in a remote part of Viti Levu and the last 15 or so kilometers is on a gravel road (I am glad we hired a 4x4) It took us 2hrs and 10mins from the Novotel Suva but we did not rush and stopped along the way.
Nestled into the side of a small hill - the thing that hit us as we got out of our vehicle and was the expansive views out to Ovalau, Motuniki and Naigai Islands you can even see Vanua Levu Island. Right out in front of the Resort on the water was a pale blue shadow that our eyes were continuously drawn to - Moon Reef. When we were there there were two bures (and two more being constructed - at the time they both had the frames ups) the one we stayed in was immaculately clean and well presented and had all the features you would expect - mosquitoe nets, hot and cold water, a kitchen (we did not use it as we chose the all inclusive package which includes accommodation and all meals), ensuite - it was not the Hilton but more than adequate and more than we expected for being in such a remote location. The food on offer was great quality and there was plenty of it. All and all Great accommodation and Good food.
But the main reason to come to Takalana was to see the dolphins and snorkel at Moon Reef and this did not disappoint. It took us less than 15mins to reach Moon Reef in the boat and as soon as we got to the reef - Dolphins popped up all over the surface of the water. After cruising around the reef we pulled up for some snorkeling - WOW! big coral formations, lots of fish - Fantastic morning at Moon Reef - I wish I brought the kids - next time.
The one thing that struck me being out in the boat with the crew from Takalana was - it was not like being on a commercial tourist operation where everything is timed down to the last minute and you can't do this and you can't do that - it was more like some friends wanted to take you out to show you what they have found and they wanted to make sure you had a good time.
