“"So much to see - so much to eat - so much fun!"”

The Punanga Nui Saturday market in Avarua is the greatest place to shop in the Cook Islands. Start with the fresh bread stalls for breakfast, grab some fresh fruit and a coconut to sip on and then start shopping. The absolutely best prices for Cook Island Black Pearls, hand-painted sarongs, woven hats, shell craft, Cook Island music CD's and so much more! Wonderful friendly Cook Islanders go out of their way to help, or just have a chat even when you are not buying. Remember, at the markets there are no extra hidden costs, just the seller and you. The absolute best way to shop in the CI's because you know that what you pay is going directly into the craftsman's pocket. Plan on spending the whole morning there - arrive early for the best food purchases - and then just loosen up and have fun!!

“A must do when in Rarotonga”
Reviewed July 7, 2011

I loved the markets! Heaps of things to buy and take home as souveniers. Alot of great local produce is available for purhcase, and the locals are great at telling you how to cook and eat things you have never tried! There is also a vast array of prepared food available for purchase too. Loved being able to buy a cold drinking coconut to sip on whilst shopping too! And all the time there is entertainment going on on the stage, dancers, singers and drummers etc. Awesome atmosphere and a must do when you go to Rarotonga.

“Amazing array of items available at the Markets”
Reviewed September 29, 2010

The markets are open every day but the big day is Saturday. On Saturday, the market opens at 6AM closes by 12PM. The Mamas of the Market are more than happy to explain how things like Tivaivai's are made or how the gorgeous handmade pareu's are done or have a chat with one of the growers displaying their fresh veggies.

The Markets have just about anything you can imagine wanting to purchase in the Cook Islands. In addition to everything for sale, you can watch a cultural show, see a coconut husking, get a tattoo, book a tour or my personal favorite, people watch!

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some of the things available at the markets .......

“A growers market”
Reviewed September 18, 2008

Punanga Nui is a growers market where stalls offer a wide range of freshly grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and plants, and fresh fish can be purchased. The market operates mainly on Saturday mornings from dawn until approx. 11am., and also every Wednesday at a reduced pace and range of produce.
In addition to the growers market, many stall-holders sell takeaway meals, cakes, sweets, cooked vegetables, fish dishes, the ever popular island donuts, and coned icecreams.
Entertainment including musicians, fundraising groups, educational promotions, dancers, carvers, visiting celebrities add vibrancy and colour to the mix.
Surrounding the market there are many permanent stalls featuring artwork, fashion, fabric art 'tivaevae', pearl and shell jewellery, crafts, wood carving, books, souvenirs, ukeleles, coconut shell bras even, as well as small cafes and diners.
Punanga Nui is a wonderful eclectic of Cook Islands life where locals gather to socialise as well as to purchase their weekly greens. It's also a highly popular attraction for tourists where fresh fruits and vegetables can be purchased at their best, along with inexpensive momentoes crafted in Rarotonga.
Highly recommend spending Saturday morning to see how the locals live, and a good opportunity to source something a little special to remind you of Rarotonga. Beautiful black pearls are a "must have" fashion accessory.
