Airport Motel - Tiare Village
Reviewed December 9, 2011

We stayed in Tiare Village for 2 weeks during Vaka Eiva paddling races. Adrienne was an excellent host and was able to answer all our questions (and we asked lots of strange questions from what is the middle foamy stuff in a coconut to directions to a massage therapist)...she knew all the answers....

This was by far the most inexpensive accomadations compared with the other teammates staying at other places. We had our own A-framed chalet which was tidy, but the carpets are a bit worn. There is no AC or ceiling fans but we were provided with floor fans when requested. The shower heads were too low for us so we had to bend a lot to wash our hair, but then just decided to shower in the main house, as well as cook in the main house to keep our chalet a bit cooler. This worked well but the dorms in the main house were pretty empty so may be different if the dorms were full... Also, due to the drought, the washing machines were not available but we just hand washed and hung up the clothing which dried quickly.

I didn't use the pool and we had a car so it was easy to get around, but it was about a 20-25 min walk to town. There was wifi available, but like all areas in Rarotonga, it is billed based on MB usage (as well as a time limit but you will use MB before you run out of time).

This was a great place to stay if you are looking for a good value. There are lots of bugs (on Rarotonga as a whole) but more so here, as you are in the jungle, and not a lot of breeze to keep the mosquitoes away.

Everyone was very friendly and I would stay here again.

We felt safe on the property and it was nice and quiet.

Room Tip: I would stay in a poolside room if they are available. They looked very nice from outside (I didn...

We stayed at the Tiare Village which was recommended to us by friends who live in Rarotonga and I have to say that it was an excellent choice. The Tiare Village is close to all amenities - airport, city, markets, beaches - everything. This is a back packer type accommodation with a real difference. There are several choices of the type of room which you can occupy - we chose a unit by the pool. The unit was very clean and very tidy and totally self contained. We had separate toilet and shower and everything we needed for our short 4 day stay. As well as the accommodation being great, I must make mention of the staff who spend endless hours each day striving to keep the grounds and apartments clean and tidy. Adrienne who is the hostess is tireless and seems to be constantly on the go. She is kind and is always available to help in any way that she possibly can. The staff - likewise. It was lovely to walk around and always be greeted with a "hello" or "kia orana" and a beautiful smile. I would highly recommend Tiare to anyone. After all why would you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a hotel room simply to sleep, when you can get better and friendlier service for less than a hundred dollars. A big thank you to Adrienne and her staff for making our stay on this beautiful island absolutely awesome.

From the hour I arrived until I (unfortunately) had to leave, this was a great spot. I was on the first leg of my RTW trip. Adrienne exceeded all expectations as a hostess. In fact, I will plan to stay in Tiare Village again when I return to renew my Cook Islands driver's license.
Pros:
1) Great parking for your scooter...you will want one in Raro
2) Very convenient to "town".
3) Excellent customer service...and I mean excellent...5 star hotels don't do as much without overcharge.
4) Very interesting global visitors..lent my walking stick to a young man from Finland...who claimed he would have broken his leg without it. The Swiss couple staying there gave me great tips that I used in Interlaken.
Cons:
1) The hostel guitar was broken...thus no music at night.
2) Because the facility has solar water heaters...the water could be cold at night...Just be aware..
3) Be aware of Rarotonga roosters! Locals say they are everywhere, and I even got a picture of one guarding the peak. They will wake you up at odd hours.

Highly recommended.

This is the second time our family has stayed at Tiare Village and for good reason. This is a back packer type accommodation that is close to the main city, Avarua (a 20 minute walk) and the main market, which sells fresh fruit and vegetables every day. The airport is about 25 minutes walk. The beginning of the most enjoyable island walk through dense native forest to needle rock is just around the corner. The whale museum, a wood carver and talented artist and pearl shell carver, Apii Rongo, are all within 5 minutes walk. There are good little grocery stores just up the road. One of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset, Black Rock, is about 5 minutes drive from Tiare Village.
The manager, Adrienne is very reliable with pick ups from the airport, even in the early hours of the morning and gave good friendly advice on car rentals.
However, the best part of Tiare Village, is the gardener, who is a lovely man and good for advice and another perspective on Rarotonga life. He also brought us fresh fruit from the spacious gardens.
We always stay in the pool side chalets which are spacious, self sufficient and reasonably priced. It does pay to bring air plugs if barking dogs and crowing roosters are not your thing, but almost anywhere on Raro has the same nightly sound effects.
You also need to be aware that we live in a world of insects and not have a phobia about this. If you watch 'Wall E' a couple of times, you might begin to see the cute side of cockroaches. These are large and can fly. I caught them occasionally and put them into the garden. Killing them just attracts other predators and spreads their eggs. Although the rooms have mosquito screened windows, the wide unscreened slots between floorboards in the toilet shower areas give them easy access. A good repellant or a mosquito net is useful if you're allergic to bites. Armies of ants become part of daily life.
The walls between units transfer sound too well, so the old adage, 'do unto others what you would have them do unto you', becomes relevant. Our neighbours for 3 - 4 days had bought their own sound system which lowered the enjoyment of being there somewhat with non stop 'elevator' music in the back ground. On request, the sound was turned down, but still there.
None of the negatives above were deserving of a lowered rating. However, the rather tired nature of the makeshift beds, mattresses and bedding are. Reported in feedback for some time now, they are in desperate need of replacement and upgrading. Attention to this area and a return to the policy of supplying towels would make Tiare Village 5/5 for me.

Fifteen minutes walk to the airport and fifteen minutes walk to town (Avarua), just down the road and around the corner from the 'Cross Island Walk' (amazing prehistoric jungle) and just a scooter ride or bus trip to the rest of the island.
If you want convenience and no fuss this place is it.
I originally booked for two nights, then after spending a day there I booked another two, and when they were almost up I booked out the rest of my trip.
This place is a little bit countryside but so close to town, taro fields and coconut trees. You will get bored if you stay anywhere else.
I stayed in a chalet which was safe and secure.
The review about the thievery episode back in 2008 is long gone, there was no sign of Adrienne's daughter and she's probably learned her lesson by now. I can understand that person being bitter about having cash stolen but that was three years ago and things are certainly not that way now.
Don't let someones unfortunate experience get in the way of you having a really good experience.
Basically you get a two night trial and if you don't like it then you're free to move on.

Room Tip: Downstairs close to the bathroom is good.

Stayed here for 3 months and loved every minute. Very cheap accommodation with good facilities (pool, internet access, laundry). We stayed in a poolside unit, it was basic but very clean. Great location, close to airport and close to main town with bus service to the rest of the Island!
Free fruit...pick what you want depending what is in season.
Manager Adriene was lovely and goes out of her way to help making us feel very welcome. Would recommend this place and would stay again!

Room Tip: More privacy in the pool units and chalets, although if you are travelling and want to meet new peop...
