We have just returned from a fantastic week in Raro, staying a the lovely Sunset Resort, which I would definatley recommend to pretty much everyone else.
The resort has a no kids under 12 policy, which was just perfect for us (Honeymooners!) and our fellow guests (older couples, family with older - very well behaved kids, and a work group) who also seemed to love the place.
We stayed in a beach front room which was incredibily spacious and very tidy. The rooms are all very modern with comfortable, stylish furniture. There is nothing super flash, but being newish it was very nice. The 3 tiered door system on the beach side of the room was awesome - it has a set of louver doors that could be fully opened as well as the louvers, a glass sliding door and a set of sliding fly screen doors which ment that you could work out the combo the suited your needs best (all closed for quietness and privacy, or open louvers and the flyscreens for airflow - or anything in between!) There was a heatpump style airconditioning unit with remote which worked very well, apart from not having a timer. The bed was very comfortable even though it was 2 singles pushed together, which was never a problem.
The included breakfast was very nice. Cerals (single serve boxes of standard NZ cerals) with milk (be aware all milk in the Cooks is long life milk - fresh milk is airfreighted in from NZ and is VERY pricey - approx $13/L!), fresh fruits, fruit salad, youghrt (home made daily I think), a variety of teas, filter coffee, juice and toast (also home made daily) with spreads. Breakfast is served from 0730-1000hrs daily, which doesnt leave much of a chance for a sleep in, but with lovely warm sunshine you dont want to be hanging around inside all day anyways!
The beach infront of the resort is beautiful. There are hammocks strung between coconut trees and loungers on the sand. There are also very comfy deck chairs (the blue ones in the pics!) on the grass area as well as under a wee pavillion at the top of the beach - which was an AWESOME place to watch the sunsets from and to gather with other guests.
The grounds of the resort are lovely. Lots of very well kept tropical gardens and large trees for shelter. The 2 pools (1 larger saltwater, 1 smaller fresh water - with bar!) are fantastic with loungers and chairs around. The larger pool could do with some more shaded areas, but if you dont want to bake in the sun there are plently of other places to hang out, and the shaded bit by the other pool was one of our fav places!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Reception is not open 24/7 but that was never a problem for us - and I did notice they left a phone on the desk in order to be able to contact staff if required overnight. Do be aware that reception - as with most places on the island - will only be open for a half day on public holidays.
The package we booked included a scooter hire - when we asked about it on our 1st day thinking it might be a bit of a hassle getting to the hire place etc, we were very pleasntly suprised by the response - "sure, when do you want it?", following which we arrange a (island) time to be picked up from the resort & taken to the hire place where we were set up with a awesome fairly new 125cc scooter which comfortably sat 2. We hired helmets for $2 a day each, even though we stood out like sore thumbs wearing them beacuse no one else was, but it did "allow" us to go over 40kms/hr (although all the non-helmet wearers seemed to as well!). If you are going to hire a scooter - its a great way to cool down on a hot day! - be aware that if it does rain, you will get VERY wet!! We had light rain coats with us, but it wasnt a problem as it was so warm that you dont get cold, and dry pretty fast!!
Also, worth noting, is the fact that the tap water at the Sunset Resort is drinkable. The have thier own UV filter system that must work very well as the water tasted like water should - of nothing! It really made a difference not having to buy water all the time.
Over all the Sunset Resort made our holiday just that much better. It was easy and relaxing and I would recommend it as a wonderful place to stay! Thankyou to all the staff and management who seemed to be working very hard to keep it this way!
