“All around perfection!”
Reviewed June 12, 2010

We have just returned from a fantastic week in Raro, staying a the lovely Sunset Resort, which I would definatley recommend to pretty much everyone else.

The resort has a no kids under 12 policy, which was just perfect for us (Honeymooners!) and our fellow guests (older couples, family with older - very well behaved kids, and a work group) who also seemed to love the place.

We stayed in a beach front room which was incredibily spacious and very tidy. The rooms are all very modern with comfortable, stylish furniture. There is nothing super flash, but being newish it was very nice. The 3 tiered door system on the beach side of the room was awesome - it has a set of louver doors that could be fully opened as well as the louvers, a glass sliding door and a set of sliding fly screen doors which ment that you could work out the combo the suited your needs best (all closed for quietness and privacy, or open louvers and the flyscreens for airflow - or anything in between!) There was a heatpump style airconditioning unit with remote which worked very well, apart from not having a timer. The bed was very comfortable even though it was 2 singles pushed together, which was never a problem.

The included breakfast was very nice. Cerals (single serve boxes of standard NZ cerals) with milk (be aware all milk in the Cooks is long life milk - fresh milk is airfreighted in from NZ and is VERY pricey - approx $13/L!), fresh fruits, fruit salad, youghrt (home made daily I think), a variety of teas, filter coffee, juice and toast (also home made daily) with spreads. Breakfast is served from 0730-1000hrs daily, which doesnt leave much of a chance for a sleep in, but with lovely warm sunshine you dont want to be hanging around inside all day anyways!

The beach infront of the resort is beautiful. There are hammocks strung between coconut trees and loungers on the sand. There are also very comfy deck chairs (the blue ones in the pics!) on the grass area as well as under a wee pavillion at the top of the beach - which was an AWESOME place to watch the sunsets from and to gather with other guests.

The grounds of the resort are lovely. Lots of very well kept tropical gardens and large trees for shelter. The 2 pools (1 larger saltwater, 1 smaller fresh water - with bar!) are fantastic with loungers and chairs around. The larger pool could do with some more shaded areas, but if you dont want to bake in the sun there are plently of other places to hang out, and the shaded bit by the other pool was one of our fav places!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Reception is not open 24/7 but that was never a problem for us - and I did notice they left a phone on the desk in order to be able to contact staff if required overnight. Do be aware that reception - as with most places on the island - will only be open for a half day on public holidays.

The package we booked included a scooter hire - when we asked about it on our 1st day thinking it might be a bit of a hassle getting to the hire place etc, we were very pleasntly suprised by the response - "sure, when do you want it?", following which we arrange a (island) time to be picked up from the resort & taken to the hire place where we were set up with a awesome fairly new 125cc scooter which comfortably sat 2. We hired helmets for $2 a day each, even though we stood out like sore thumbs wearing them beacuse no one else was, but it did "allow" us to go over 40kms/hr (although all the non-helmet wearers seemed to as well!). If you are going to hire a scooter - its a great way to cool down on a hot day! - be aware that if it does rain, you will get VERY wet!! We had light rain coats with us, but it wasnt a problem as it was so warm that you dont get cold, and dry pretty fast!!

Also, worth noting, is the fact that the tap water at the Sunset Resort is drinkable. The have thier own UV filter system that must work very well as the water tasted like water should - of nothing! It really made a difference not having to buy water all the time.

Over all the Sunset Resort made our holiday just that much better. It was easy and relaxing and I would recommend it as a wonderful place to stay! Thankyou to all the staff and management who seemed to be working very hard to keep it this way!

I thought it was only fair to post a review of our accommodation as I found this site more than helpful when doing research prior to our trip.
We arrived in Rarotonga on the 21st April. It was raining when we got off the plane and rained for the following week. We read a lot and used the time to go to nice restaurents with views for lunch then just had a simple meal at home at night.
For the first week we were booked into Muri Beach Cottages which I will review separately. We then flew to Aitutaki for 5 nights staying at Paradise Cove which I will also review separately. On our return to Rarotonga we stayed at the Sunset Resort mainly because it was relatively close to the airport as we had a 7am departure flight. We stayed at Sunset for 2 nights and would have loved to have stayed there for longer.
Our studio room was quite modern and spacious with two large bedrooms. The main bedroom had a king size bed and the 2nd bedroom a queen size bed. Both bedrooms were air conditioned and had adequate builtins. The kitchen was adequately equipped with everything that you could possibly need for a holiday.
The location in my opinion was much nicer than Muri Beach. The beach in front of the resort was sandy and ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
The gardens and surrounds of the resort were well maintained and quite attractive.
The staff were very friendly and keen to help especially in the main dining/breakfast area.
The resort itself was very quiet with no children under the age of 12 allowed. The other guests all seemed to be very friendly and approachable.
All in all I would certainly return to this resort. I commend the management for the presentation and standard offered at The Sunset Resort.

I hope I can add a few comments that may help you decide if this is the place for you.
Airport pick up was quick and eazy leave it to the resort to arrange,Stopped at shop on way back to resort (5 Minutes) to get esentuals like longlife milk, tonic water and nibbles. It was the middle of the night so no one around and all was very quiet.
Good night sleep as the beds are very confortable and have good mattresses. We had a unit at the road end but never noticed any road noise not that there is much traffic anyway.Never noticed the Rooster that called on and off from 5.30 am every other morning.Take ear plugs or get a sea front unit as they could not hear them down there.Roosters are a problem at a few resorts as they breed wild in the hedge rows and my friend stayed down at Muri with the same complaint.
Breakie was all you needed to get a start on the day.Cerial,Fresh fruit, coffee & toast.
Hire Car pick up on time and a bonus included in our package the bikes also looked a lot of fun for the younger ones. But be prepared to get wet if you get stuck in a downpour we were nice and dry in the car.Get a $2 temp drivers licence from hire co each day and don't bother going to the police station unless you are there for more than a few days.
Saturday Market in town worth a visit get some fresh fruit and have a bite to eat off the BBQ.Drive around the island takes about 40 minutes and as long as you stick to the main ring road the roads are great and easy to get around.Enjoy the singing of the Sunday Worship and after that just relax. There are plenty of places to eat out of the resort and two within easy 4 minutes walk of Sunset .The food and menu selection at Sunset was average like most places we dined.Service was always very good being served quickly and not having to wait on drinks unlike our Fiji experiances.
Sunset has two very good pools and while we were there the place was only 50% full we often had the pool to ourself.I would say they could do with more umberellas at the top pool (2) and should enforce a no glass policy .I did not notice any non resadince swimming unlike some other large resorts.Pools are private and well landscaped along with the rest of the gardens.
The beach is great, plenty of shade and seating .Found the hammock very relaxing.Water was warm and plenty of fish to see and feed.Snorkel gear provided free.Take wet socks and explore the reef for hours. The sand at the beach is course but well groomed and a couple of good swimming holes can be found no need to go all the way to Muri.
.Make sure you have a drink at the Drum Beat Bar and see the sunset from the beach. The Resort is very quiet at night so good for familys and couples. The young ones all headed for town at night so made a late night dip in the pool very pleasant and relaxing. As long as you are quiet you can slip into the pool at any time sign said 10pm.I had a swim at 3am when we first arrived.
Best meal.Fish & Chips at the Flying Fish on the other side if town.BBQ tables and overflow can eat next door and get a drink at the Fishing Club .
Nice swimming at Muri and at the Rarotongan, park Opp the Dive Cntr. But if wou did not want to travel theSunset Resort has it all .

We chose to spend the final day of our holiday at the Sunset Resort having previously read about it on TripAdvisor and stopping in to visit earlier on in the week (we'd been staying at another resort). The setting was beautiful, the rooms and public areas were immaculate and well maintained, and we will definitely return to stay there next time we're in Rarotonga.

There are two pools (one quite large the other smaller) with comfortable lounge furniture poolside, and a lovely all tide beach that we enjoyed swimming and snorkelling during our brief visit. Nice hammocks on the beach as well.

We had two meals at the Anchorage Restaurant and both provided good food at reasonable prices. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a number of excellent restaurants close by/within walking distance as well if you're so inclined.

The kitchennette in our studio unit was in brand new condition and beautifully appointed. The Resort was peaceful and quiet despite being almost fully booked out.

We had friends who we'd met while staying at the other resort with us come to visit while we were there and they also booked out early and came to spend the last couple of days of their visit at the Sunset Resort.

Will look forward to returning.

My husband (along with family and friends) stayed at the Resort for 8 nights. What an ideal location as it was very handy to the Town Centre, Airport, Restaurants (recommend Tumunu for a Seafood platter) and Bike/Scooter Hire right across the road! Staff were very friendly and helpful from our Shuttle driver- to the Restaurant/Reception/Bar staff Our unit (2bed) was extremely spacious, modern and CLEAN with very comfortable beds - equipped with very adequate air con! LOVED the swimming pools and cocktail hour at the Drum Beat bar. Also recommend trying the snorkelling - it is a must to see beauitful tropical fish at a hands length away!

Great place to stay. Modern spotless, private and lovely! They gave us a great deal and excellent servcie even though we were only staying there for two nights. Two gorgeous large swimming pools to choose from. Being close to the airport was very handy. With a beach alot more quiter than the busy Muri, but still very beautiful . Highly recommended.

Just returned from 8 wonderful days at the Sunset Resort. Great beachfront studio with the most amazing beachfront view. Arrived in the early hours of the morning and were absolutely stunned by view when we awoke later that morning. Were warmly greeted by Kimi at the airport and the other staff at the hotel were equally as friendly and helpful. The choice of two pools and the happy hour at the Drumbeat was great! The sunsets were beautiful and it certainly is on the right side of the island! Quite a small resort providing intimacy and friendliness. We sought breakfast alternatives after a few days as the continental breakfast option became a bit boring. Also had meals away from the resort after the first night. We plan to return to Rarotonga one day and hope Sunset Resort retains its appeal until we get that opportunity. Adelaide SA
