We decided to return back to The Sunset on the 15th August for another 5 nights after the wonderful holiday we had there last October 2011. The location is great, we hired scooters so only a 10 minute ride into town and easy walking to some nice restaurants. We had a poolside room which was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Kimi and staff are all very helpful, and made us feel very welcome. The Continental breakfast was nice with fresh fruit, cereal and toast, we did upgrade to a cooked breakfast one morning and that was lovely too. The day we arrived the Anchorage had their Seafood menu that night, it was absolutely divine!! Sonny in the restaurant is a real character and loads of fun, watch out for his cocktails tho! Having the rule of no kids under 12 years old was one of the main reasons we chose the Sunset, as we wanted a relaxing holiday and that's exactly what we got. So we look forward to our next visit to Rarotonga and will definately be going back to The Sunset.

We recently got married at the Sunset Resort. We found the staff to be amazing, Lynette, the Wedding Planner, was just incredible and we had the time of our lives. Beautiful place to get married and to stay for a holiday. Everyone who came to the wedding was impressed and would recommend it to anyone wanting a holiday or wanting to marry. The rooms were lovely and the facilities were superb.

We booked 3 nights in a Beachfront Studio, to attend a family wedding at this resort. The Beachfront Studios offer a really lovely view out through the glass sliding doors over the lawn to the coconut palms and the water's edge. The room had sliding insect screens alongside the doors, so you can leave the glass doors open for breeze but not get any bugs. The room also had really effective shutters on all windows, so it was quite dark when they're all closed. However, the downer for us was the noise. In Beachfront Studio Number 5 in particular, it comes at you from all four sides. The main resort walkway down to the beachfront runs along one side of the room, and it's inevitably noisy. The lawn area in front is a public resort space, and the area behind the rooms is the walkway to access the row of 5 beachfront studios. And also, there was an adjoining door between us and Studio 4 and you could hear 'everything' from their room.
We ate at the Anchor Restaurant for breakfasts and a lunch, and for the wedding itself. The continental breakfast was good. You could also pay to buy hot breakfast options. At lunch and during the wedding dinner, we had some particularly delicious salads.
The resort is in two halves: beachside, and rear 'landside', with the office and restaurant in the middle. Both the front and rear areas each have a pool. Our airport pick up transfer with Kimi was fun. The office staff at the Sunset Resort were very helpful when our transfer out (booked through another resort) was problematic.

Room Tip: If staying here again, I would request Beachfront Studio 1 or 2 as a first preference, and request a room without an adjoining door.

This is a lovely spot in a great location on the west side of the island. Just the right mix of creature comforts and a relaxed Island feel,at a reasonable price. We were able to walk to one of the dive centres, and there were car hire, dairy (corner store), and other restaurants nearby. Two pools, really good restaurant. We enjoyed our meals there and they had live music on some nights. The staff are friendly and happy and service is terrific. Managers live adjacent and their care and attention shows in the way the resort is run. There was a wedding while we were there, but it was no disruption at all, just happy music and dancing which ended early enough for everyone to get a good sleep. Room choice can be important though- see below.

Room Tip: Next time we would definitely book a beach-side room despite the extra cost. We had a room backing on the main road - traffic not a problem, but the marauding dogs on the island bark at any time and fight etc. Also, all the other rooms form a U shape around one of the pools, so that if people come back to their rooms late and loudly, or sit out on their balconies socializing, the noise is unavoidable. There's a quiet policy very clearly printed at the front desk and in the rooms. Unfortunately there are always inconsiderate people and our next-door neighbors were among them !

The good: Clean, generally friendly staff, especially the bartender. They picked up and dropped off at airport. Location was perfect, a quick 12 minute scooter ride into town, quiet and walking distance to other restaurants and attractions. Value was good. We stayed six nights. Our room was poolside, short walk to the beach (you can upgrade to an oceanside room for $120+ night), functioning AC, nice flat screen TV (no cable, and only 3 channels), somtimes functioning wifi but not dependable (normal thru out the island), and room was also very spacious and nicely furnished.
Room for improvement (many but mostly minor): daily breakfast was included in our package but was the same every day, no variety; toast, fruit, cereal, juice, coffee, and yogurt. They should add eggs every now and then, maybe potatoes/hash brown, etc. Sometimes you felt from some of the staff that they wanted you out of there. Not much effort made by many in the restaurant to make you feel welcome. The restaurant was way overpriced for dinner and not that good; $60 US for two appetizers, two glasses of wine and dessert. Front desk made multiple mistakes, they forgot to make our included car rental reservation (major), did not have correct info on some shows and excursions (minor), we arrived at 6am and they did not allow us to check in early even though it was part of the pkg (major) unless we would pay $160 extra - had to wait until noon (after flying for 10 hours) and house keeping did not clean our room for one night and two days (while we were on another island excursion). Also, they close at 6pm, so don't need anything after that time.

Still, for pricey Cook Islands, it was good, safe, and met more than basic needs. Would recommend to friends.

Room Tip: If possible, get early check in (ask them to include it), poolside rooms are great and have two entrances - one to pool another towards driveway to main hotel entrance, did not see what oceanside rooms looked like.
