“make sure you get what you booked”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2007

This is undoubtedly a nice place to stay. The mezzazine rooms look excellent and the beachfront open bar and deck are truly delightful. The excellent honesty bar is a terrific idea. We booked one of the mezzazine rooms only to find that we were moved to a far inferior budget room to make way for a group. We wouldn't have minded this if the management were upfront about it and provided us with a reduced rate for the budget room (next to roof overlooking the main road, so it's hot, noisy, small and cramped) and offered their apologies. We had the feeling of being a bit duped after we noticed the room change
when checking out. We ended up paying the same for the budget room as we would have for the far better mezzanine rooms (of which there are many). Paradise Inn have some arrangement with Raro tours for airport transfers which is a bit dubious. Raro Tours charge $15 per person for the 4 km trip from the airport. We weren't informed of the transport options when making the booking and were a bit surprised when we were not listed on the manifest when we arrived. You can get the bus for $4.

One of the first things you'll notice when trying to book at the Paradise Inn, is that it's often full, which tells you something. The place is good value and the location very convenient for almost everything (walk to town in less than 10 minutes). The rooms are basically self-catering units with fridge, small cooker and sink. Basic cooking pans and utensiles are provided but it's irritating that only two of each of plates, knives, forks etc. are provided. Tea and coffee is available throughout the day free of charge. The rooms themselves offer no views at all, but there is a great lounging area overlooking the beach. There is also a small library where you can swap paperbacks. Rooms were clean and tidy. The owners are great hosts and will help you with almost anything (I needed a quick trip to a hospital late at night which was arranged readilly). The only negative issue with Paradise Inn is the noisy neighbours (people, dogs, chickens) on the east side of the property (I used earplugs most nights). Try to ask for a room on the west side of the building which will help a lot. The hosts are aware of their noisy neighbours and have asked them regularly to keep the noise down, but to no avail.

  • Liked — Location, staff, value.
  • Disliked — Noisy neighbours
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for room on the west side of teh building.

We arrived at Rarotonga airport expecting to be met by the owner of the beach cottage we had booked. By 1am there was still no-one to meet us, so asking around a local guy, Malc by name, said he'd take us to the Paradise Inn. Not only did he take us there for no charge, he secured a good rate for us. That first night I was in a foul mood and was ready to leave the island on the next available flight. After meeting Pam, the owner, that all changed. The inn is charming, quirky, the honesty bar is fantastic, the deck great for hanging out withn agreat view, but best of all the place is really, really friendly. Many people there seem to be returning guests and it's not hard to see why. If you want to stay in a plush beachside resort then give this place a miss, but as nowhere on the island is more than 25 mins away by bus that wasn't important to us. We stayed in one of the two cheaper rooms which are probably more suited to budget travellers, but if we had wished we could have had one of the rooms with the bed on a mezzanine, they are a special concept for couples or families. The greatest thing about this place though is the owners and the way they run it. They make the place what it is, and that is a fun place to stay.

This place is great. Stayed there for almost a month in Nov 2004. The units have everything you need, including free tea and coffee which, when your on a budget, really is a nice touch.
The owners Marc and Pam couldn't have been nicer. They even shared birthday cake with us on Marc's birthday!
There is a lovely sun deck to sit on and watch the sea. If this sounds boring to you wait till you see it. The view over the reef is unbelievable. Truly magical. We saw humpback whales 3 or 4 days running without haveing to leave our seats or put our books down. The sound of the sea crashing over the reef lulls you to sleep at night and is the first thing you hear when you wake up in the morning as you fix yourself a cup of tea and wonder what you'll do for the rest of the day........
I can't recommend this place enough.
