Booked into the KiiKii for a 3-week stay while volunteering in Raro with my 13-year old son. Prepared for the worst, based on reviews, so booked into Oceanview room - Room 17 - corner room, ground floor. Ok - its not the Ritz, but it is charming, if a bit worse for wear. Cons - paint peeling, tiles chipped off counters and showers, maintenance not so great, pool very small, not a swimmable beach. Pros - ramshackle charm, lovely staff, location not far at all from town, beach views spectacular, cozy, homey feel. Our room opened via sliding glass doors onto 2 sides - the sea on one and the pool on the other. Patios on each side. Great plus. Functional kitchen with stove and fridge, lots of light. No frills - no swim up bar or beach restaurant (no restaurant, actually), but you can walk about a minute to Club Raro next door for that stuff, so who cares. Good value for money - we'd stay again in a second.

Firstly we booked their home in Aroa but were not told till we arrived at 11pm and dropped in Muri that they had sold that home. The smell when walking into the house was dreadful the ceilings were black with mould and the roof of the house and I suspect it was in the walls also. The ceiling fan in the lounge was hanging by a wire and we were too frightened to use it incase it fell.

When I complained to the Kiikii they took offence and weren't interested in helping even though after 1 day both my daughters had swollen faces and were breathless and nauseas from the mould. On the Island they call it the Mouldy motel and boy are they right, I would not recommend them to anyone due to the filth and they lack of co-operation.

Fortunately for us the Sunrise Beachfront bungalows rescued us from our tormend, otherwise we would have gone home 7days earlier.

The Kii Kii Motel is a wonderful family run hotel that offers fantastic value for your money. We have stayed in the motel several times and have always had a great time. The rooms are very basic but clean and for the price that you pay - you can't beat it. The local bus stops right outside the door or you are a short bicycle ride from town. For a true Rarotongan experience, I highly recommend this motel.

We stayed in the Kii Kii bungalows that are on the opposite side of the island to the actual motel. They were called deluxe, which I found was not my interpretation of delux, but they were dulux compared to what was available. Is was quite clean and comfortable with adequate kitchen facilities to cook for yourself, which is a great idea on a budget, because there is lots of delicious fresh fish for sale.

The view from the front deck was just like a 'screen saver' it was magic. It was lovely watching the sun set over the ocean from our private balcony each afternoon.

The snorkelling in the water in front of the bungalow was great. It was much better up the beach about 1km where there was a mrine reserve, but just in front had lots of fish and starfish to look at.

The shower was a bit grubby with mould around the seal, but we got used to it.. the water pressure was not very good either, but you are on an island in the middle of the pacific what can you expect! It was really great, I just write this so people are aware that it wont be perfect and nor would you want it to be. It all adds to the trip!

Also cyclones wiped out a lot of crops and coral at the beginning of 2005. They neglected to mention this until we got there, so were a little disappointed at the lack of coral, but the beautiful fish more than made up for it.

My husband and I were here in June 2003 and had a truly wonderful time. We booked in advance the budget room direct with the hotel (kiikiimotel.co.ck) and had a very nice correspondence with Ruth, the hotel manager. She also arranged airport pickup at a very reasonable price. As some other Rarotongan hotels charge you 50% of the rate even if you arrive only 3 hours before check-in time (that is almost criminal!), we could enter our room at the Kiikii motel immediately. That is very nice, because you are very tired as all arrivals are in the morning after a 9-12 hour flight from the US. (For us, leaving from the Netherlands, it was in total 38 hours from door to door!)

The budget room was a little disappointing, very budget indeed, although it had a bathroom, sitting area, comfortable chairs, kitchen etc. Ruth offered us at an very attractive rate a so called West Wing room. This is a 2 room accommodation, with full kitchen, a living area and a sleeping room. Some items are a little old but very well maintained, the toaster and water cooker were brand-new and the beds very comfortable, overall it is the best value in Rarotonga. The bus stops in front of the hotel, twice every hour. There is a small supermarket to the left after a 15 minute walk and large supermarkets are in Avarua, the capital city, just 5 minutes by bus. There is a swimming pool in the middle of all (just ground floor) apartments with beds around for sunbathing. There are also apartments with ocean view.

We were out almost every night to several Island Nights with diner buffets in the large resorts. With the bus every hotel was easily reached and we could take the last bus leaving the party’s well after they were finished. To go to the sandy beaches, the hotel is situated on a beach on the rocky North side, it was only a 10 minute bus ride. So we had all the benefits of this beautiful island without paying the enormous rates of the big resorts! All the Kiiikii motel employees are unbelievable friendly and assist full, that gives you a warm welcome to the Cook Islands. We traveled all over the South Pacific, stayed in much more upgraded hotels, but have the best memories of this hotel. This was really the nicest accommodation of our trip.
