Muri Shell Bungalows
Reviewed February 24, 2010

We have stayed at the Muri Shell Bungalows now 3 times and it is always our first choice when travelling to Rarotonga. We have previously stayed in November and found Terry to be very friendly, chatty and helpful. He is usually sitting on the deck waiting for us to arrive...in the middle of the night as that's when the flights are scheduled. This time we met Tina and Mike and found them to be extremely hard working, convivial hosts, always willing to try and remedy any hiccups that occured. It was so nice to meet you at last.
Muri beach, a very short walk away, is just the most beautiful beach on the island. The warm water makes taking a dip extremely easy and snokelling around the rocks is always rewarded with plenty of sealife. Just be weary of the trigger fish in Nov when they are guarding their eggs...very aggressive if you come too close! This time we visited the Marine reserve opposite the Fruits of Rarotonga shop and were blown away by the amount of fish swimming around...well worth a visit.
Dining out is always enjoyable and there are plenty of choices within walking distance of your accommodation. If you hire a car we would recommend the Tamarind House and Trader Jacks for excellent quality food. We also went to Raviz (Indian Cuisine) in Avarua, where you can get a $15 buffet on Fri and Sat nights which was excellent value and great food.
If you want to cater for yourself, as long as you declare it when entering, you can take most of your food in with you. Milk is very expensive so take some UHT milk, packets of Raro fruit juice, crackers and toppings, cans and sauces, even bacon/cheese etc and stock up on the ridiculous cheap duty free alcohol at the airport when you arrive.
We will always recommend the Shell Bungalows to everyone we know heading over to Rarotonga and we hope to return again one day.

Muri Shell Bungalows (three only-family owned) are so close to the most beautiful lagoon imagineable. Very reasonably priced accommodation for families or couples who like to self cater or be close to ammenities if they want a meal out. Terry Lambert is a wealth of knowledge if you need to find out anything about Rarotonga. If you require air conditioning then this is not your place but the breeze on Muri Beach was always refreshing. The bus picks up and drops off anywhere around the island. We purchased Drivers Licences but found it was easier and less expensive to take the bus.
Great eateries close by; Stephano's Italian, Sandals, Maro's for a coffee or breakfast, The Point....the list is endless. ATM's just up the road and the best fun Coconut Tours, a few hours of buggy or quad riding around places you would never see. (Wear old clothes and have a waterproof camera). Had the most amazing time and thankfully Cyclone Pat veered away from Rarotonga but it did cause major destruction to Aitutaki the morning we were to fly over for a day trip. Will have to come back again!!!

This is a (white) pearl in the oyster. You live “with” very carefully hosts in a well groomed area. You wont see them a lot, but always somebody is here to help you.
As shown on the website, there are 3 units. 2 bungalows and a flat in connection with a shell&sushi-shop. In respect to the quiet days&nights, that is definitely nothing for party-people or other shouting crowds.
There is also next door Areiti-taxi available.
The way to muri-beach is easy and next to the pacific-resort. You can walk on the beach as long as you can in the clockwise-direction(anti-clockwise you end before the “harbour”).
(Sadly)There is only one low net for beachvolleyball at vara’s under a tree with a lot of coral-pieces in the sand....
If you are a chili-fan: can be picked up from several shrubs.

Myself and my partner stayed at Muri Shell bungalows in April at the end of a 9 month trip around the world. I can honestly say it was one of the best places I've ever stayed - clean, comfortable, around the corner from the most wonderful beach and fantastic, hospitible owners. Quite simply paradise - I'll be returning as soon as I can!

Stayed 12 days in Sept./2009. Great accommodating host in Terry and Pu. If you are looking for a well priced self catering unit than I would recommend this unit. Well located in Muri Beach and your own access to a great beach location. Units are about 5 years old and are due for some general maintenance issues. I am a stickler for maintenance, so dont get me wrong these are comfortable, clean units. Rarotonga is a great place and didnt have enough time to see and do everything there. My recomendation is spend 3 weeks with one week on an outer Island. Please contact me via email if you have questions. Best wishes Chuck and Barb ,Canada

Tina and Mike have top notch homes for rent and went out of their way to make our vacation very special.
The bungalows were very clean, well maintained and had every amenity we needed.
Fruit trees nearby provided local flavor and the roosters made sure you never missed the morning sunrise.
A short walk to the beach for a morning swim is a must along with fresh sushi from the shop next door.
