I found this to be an excellent option. The hotel was nice, centrally located and clean. The staff is friendly and there is coffee in the morning (no breakfast). The wifi worked well. It was an excellent budget option, much better than a hostel, if you are 2 people.
Further, the hotel is located in this precious old building and has a really old elevator, making it tons of fun to be there.

You can not beat the Hotel Palacio for the price. It's smack dab in the middle of Montevideo's Ciudad Viejo -- minutes from the major historic, cultural, dining, drinking, and shopping destinations. It's even a short walk from a small Rambla beach that, while not as nice as those in the Pocitos neighborhood, was fine for a quick dip at sunset. If you love old world details -- marble, stained glass, a bronze-and-wrought-iron cage elevator -- make your kingdom in the Palacio. The family that has owned the Palacio for the past three decades couldn't be more attentive. (Son Fernando mans the internet and English translation.) Try to score one of the penthouse Superior rooms on the sixth floor. If they're booked, and if you have three or four people in your party, ask for one of the suites on the fifth floor. Though smaller, they also boast balconies.

Room tip: Try to score one of the 6th floor Superior rooms or 5th floor suites. Both have balconies.

We loved this place! We stayed on level 6 (top floor facing towards the city) in a private double room - a huge balcony with fantastic views 180 degree over the old town and even to the water. Comfy bed, fridge, cable TV, A/C and fan, awesome old school lift. It was in a great location within the old town - main sites all within walking distance, Good restaurants, supermarket all close by. Around the corner from the main square. Highly recommend and excellent value for money for what we got US$50 a night also had AMAZING wifi even on the top floor.

Room tip: Get a room on the top floor if you can - fantastic views

The hotel is in a good location, just around the corner to the plaza independent.

The staff are all pleasant andadvised us on day one where not to go at night, recommendations for meals etc.

The cleaning staff were great we never saw them but if we went out when we got back the room was clean, new towels and soap.

This is no frills but for $45USD per night this is what we were expecting.

The only issue was the room was very small for two people and the balcony was really just a ledge.

Other than this I think this is worth the cost.

Stayed here for two nights in November 2015, loved it! Older building with classic elevator, small but comfortable room, very nice and helpful staff. Would definitely stay here again on my next visit!

Room tip: Top floor rooms have an amazing balcony!
