“Great Location”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

Stayed for two nights. The room was cosy but contained everything we needed. Its also had an amazing balcony with great views in every direction. The lift is old fashioned but very cool.

The location is great with a lot of bars and restaurants on the next block.

Would definitely come back and recommend it to family and friends.

Room Tip: Room 67 is on the top floor and has a huge balcony

Stayed there a couple of times recently, found it as pleasant as allways. Since rooms are usually furnished 3/4 being items of style of 1900-1930s era and 1/4 being modest more recent additions, would be great if they once go to antique auctions and replace those more recent furnitures with older ones. Anyway rooms are charming the way they are. I find it a good idea that they do not serve breakfast, because in the 2** hotel range you usually can not expect anything great and less so really good, espresso-machine made coffee which is paramount to me. For your morning coffee (with some croissants) you could go to the La Passiva bar on Plaza Constitucion (where the cathedral is), it is on the first corner on the left reaching the Plaza from the Hotel (just one blockaway ), operational from 08.15am, and as authentically Montevideo as it can possibly get. If you need your coffee allready at 07.00am or on Sundays, there is a McDonalds/McCafé just a few meters ahead of La Passiva, coffee is fine, just that it is, well, a McDonalds. Strange enough, Cappuccino is more expensive there then in the La Passiva. For your daytime Espresso, Bar Bacacay in Calle Bacacay (2 blocks away) is a cultivated place to go, as is Cafe Brasilero, Ituzaingó Corner 25 Mayo

We arrived at 5 in the morning and the lady at the front desk gave us a room to rest until our regular room was ready around noon. That was our welcome at this wonderful old place, and our stay of 12 days were no less well attended by the great staff. The location was just right for us, with bus lines to everywhere, and walking distance up and down town. Not for any seeking new and glitz and perfection, but if you can appreciate riding in an old open air ornate rod iron lift, this might be your place.

Room Tip: Higher rooms in the back are cooler and quieter.

Nice value, great location and a friendly staff are the highlights of Hotel Palacio. The rooms are pretty basic but there was a little fridge and the coolest old style elevator! Worth the stay if you are looking for a moderate place to stay.

Hotel Palacio is nothing grand, but it is reasonable value for money. The location is excellent - right next to Plaza Independencia; one of the main squares in Montevideo.

The staff do not speak English, so have a little Spanish to hand. They will provide you with a map of Montevideo and will happily help you with any questions you may have.

The rooms are reasonable size, clean & tidy. We had rooms facing the street and thought there may have been some street noise given we were staying on Friday & Saturday nights, but this wasn't a problem. The rooms are dated in 1940/1950's fashion, which seem to provide a charm to the hotel. There is an old fashioned lift & spiral staircase to access reception & the floors. Free wi-fi is available through the hotel & coffee at reception. There is no breakfast or kitchen facilities available (this is a budget hotel, not hostel).

There are various cafes, restaurants & bars nearby. It is an easy walk to the port & market area as well as the shopping area of Montevideo. We took a bus to the beaches just outside of the city; there are plenty of bus stops close to the hotel including the bus stop for the bus to the airport. There is also a self guided walking tour of the old grandeur of Montevideo; the tourist office can provide these details or look out for the boards around the streets.

Rooms are spotlessly clean and good sized, if dated (though 1940s/1950s dated, not 80s/90s).  Spiral staircase from ground to top floor surrounds a beautiful, wrought iron, open lift, which the staff seem to be constantly cleaning and polishing.  Staff are friendly and helpful, but speak little or no English, though will nonetheless enthusiastically give restaurant tips and advice on where to and not to go; if you don't speak Spanish like us, you'll pick up the bits you need to.  Location is good, right next to Plaza de Independencia, but don't venture too much further after dark as the area beyond becomes increasingly dodgy (note that getting out of hotel to the plaza and beyond is fine, it is only the area beyond the hotel which is not nice).  No breakfast or kitchen facilities available, though one day coffee was provided in reception. Excellent wifi throughout.

Room Tip: Request a room on second or third floors, the balconies and French windows of which lift the rooms f...

Hotel Palacio is very well preserved building with antique furniture from 50-60 situated in the heart of the old city. In the hotel you have a feeling like you travel in time for half a century. Service staff members are elderly venerable ladies and gentlemen, who are extremely polite and grandmotherly. A lift in the hotel is a piece of art that should be kept in a museum! Personnel does not speak English but they will explain you everything in Spanish and with their gesture you will get everything what they wanted to say.
