“Nice location, well managed, clean. A good bet!”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

I had look at several hotels in this area the afternoon I arrived in Montevideo and was very happy I chose this one. I had a sizable room overlooking a smaller street and everything was in good working condition and very clean. The older woman working at the reception was very helpful and was looking after me and told me what areas of the City to avoid after 9:00 PM. I highly recommend this hotel for those that are looking for something nice and on a budget at the same time. You are in walking distance to everything Historical in the city including the restaurants at the Port.

Room Tip: I had a nice view room on a upper floor but you can also get up to the rooftop for a good view of th...

We had a small room with a cute little balcony and the aircon was great. The location is right in the middle of the ciudad vieja. The owners are adorable and give great trip advice. Don't expect a flashy hotel or an amazing room, but you get a great deal for what you pay for.

I booked this hotel on the basis of theTripAdvisor rating. I don't normally review on here much but spend over 100 nights a year away in hotels. Before you book the hotel you should ask yourself why it is so cheap? The room was cramped and could not walk round bed without hitting furniture. There is no aircon and the night we stayed was very hot. Fan supplied very noisy. The bed was very uncomfortable. I would rate this hotel in backpackers category old and tatty. I checked out after the first night.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your opinion. In effect, that week was extremely hot (38 º C) and only the Superior rooms had air conditioning. We are in the process of installing air conditioning in all Standard rooms and we expect to finish by December 2014.
On the other hand, the hotel doesn’t have rooms for three people, but when guests request, we add an extra bed in a double room. We understand that the room with the extra bed, becomes so tight that we charge only $ 7 for the extra bed.
Anyway, after your review we are planning to discard the possibility of extra bed.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

This antiquated little hotel was a great find for us. Our room was a decent size on the top floor, but probably felt bigger due to the huge balcony overlooking the city. It was great value. The owner who showed us to our room (via the quaint, but creaky, lift that runs up the middle of the building) was very charming; eager to tell us all about Montevideo and for us to approve of his hotel! The location is perfect, just around the corner from Plaza Independencia. There is no breakfast, but otherwise the Hotel Palacio is a great base for a trip to Montevideo.

Room Tip: Try for a room on the top floor with a balcony

All of the input about this property being perfectly located and having a charming history are exactly true. Our room on the top floor was small, but the bathroom was the size you might expect in a McMansion. And it had a balcony with an outrageous view bigger than the room.

There is a slightly balky elevator that services all 6 floors. The staff doesn't speak English, but we were able to converse just fine. At the end of our lovely stay, we were presented with a $52 bill.

I looked around for Allen Funt to see if we were indeed on Candid Camera, but alas, it is just the going rate there. A charming old place right in the heart of Montevideo for a small fee. Awesome! .

This lovely hotel, has the charm of old Montevideo. Set in the beginning of the old city (the safe part), it is literally 1 minute walk from the main sq and 1 minute walk from bars restaurants and outdoor cafes in the old town. The mercado del puerto is 10 minutes walk away. The staff was just amazing. I will surely go back! Wifi was super strong. never failed once!

This hotel was built in 1928, at the height of the economic boom that resulted from Uruguay's cattle and leather exports to Europe. It has been lovingly maintained, with the marble stairs, polished woodwork and brass, and quality construction that marked this era. The rooms may be a bit small, but they are very comfortable, clean and quiet. The service is superb; the Wi-Fi connection is fast and effective; the location is right off the pedestrian walkway that leads from the central plaza to the old central market in the port district; and the room rates are quite reasonable compared with those charged by nearby chain hotels.
