“Nicer and safer end of town”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

When in Montevideo I stayed in Ciudad Vieja and Pocitos. If I could turn back the clock I would have come straight to Pocitos because Ciudad Vieja has nothing special to offer and is a more run down and dangerous part of town.

I had the option of exploring further east but I was quite satisfied with Pocitos. There are plenty of places to eat, some good hostels, and a beach that is easy to get to. The beach is clean with fine sand and spacious with calm waters that seem to be a mix of sea and river. The water is fairly clouded and if you look carefully it appears to contains sparkly bits, sediments that have been carried down the river maybe?

Anyway it is fine to swim in and worth a visit.

“Just sand and sweet water”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

This is a river beach and depending on the wind you will get a "brown" water. No bars, no chairs, no baths, only local people drinking their "mate" (hot tea). To get better water go east as further as you can once as they say the Atlantic Ocean begins in Punta Del Leste..... seems to be true.

“Nice beach!”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

Calm and warm waters! I wish to come back to enjoy more Pocitos! It felt like home in Rio! I went there by bus, was very easy to reach the place, no need for a cab! Them, we just enjoyed strolling along the waterline and endup in a shopping mall near the place called Carretas. From there we took a cab to the city center again. I recomend!

“Nice upscale area of town...”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

Montevideo is not Buenos Aires for sure, but you will find this area to be a bit more lively than the rest of the city… Upscale, more expat oriented, it offers a different take on the city.

“Don't stay anywhere else!”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

This area is great for a female solo traveler. I walked around at night, no problem and there are many amenities and hotels in the area. It's close to the river walk where it's easy to catch a bus, hail a cab or just buy a latte and sit quietly and people watch. I would definitely stay in the area again.
