“Great place for BBQ Grills”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

A taste of the local gastronomic choices can be tried here, in numerous grills throughout the inside of this port market. It is located right across the avenue from the Montevideo Port, site of cruise ship docking and the Buquebus ferry over to Buenos Aires. This port market is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. BBQ prices are a bit higher than in Grills around the city given the fact this is the preferred spot for tourists as well. The hop on hop off bus stops in the corner. There are plenty artisans selling their goods and paintings right outside the market and a currency exchange location as well. Money exchange rates in Uruguay are official so you are sure to get the right rate (give or take a point or so) from every currency exchange office. On Saturday noon you can find a Musician or two playing an achordeon or guitar in the market square. The Perez Castellanos pedestrian street can take you walking over to the Sarandi Pedestrian street and right to the end of the Old City and start of the "modern" side of town, which starts from the Independence square and on. A great city to visit walking, just be aware that like in every big city, you have to watch your valuables and be alert for pick pockets or the like which might tend to prey on you just like they do on locals.

“Visiting old Montevideo”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

After walking thru the Old Town, be sure to go to the Mercado del Puerto, eat parrillada (barbecue) at one of the many restaurants, and after lunch walk and get to know the many shops.

“Very nice”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

I spent some time walking thought the old city and stopped there for a lunch. The market is very similar to what we see in other cities, presenting to the tourist a lot of restaurants and shops where you can buy souvenirs. Give it a try, choose a good restaurant and enjoy the food. I hope the food does not take so long for you as it was for me!
