We saw the restaurant marked on a city map and ran there in the rain. What an unexpected pleasure. Old wooden and cozy interior - it was founded in 1877 - bustling with an animated lunch crowd and with friendly and efficient servers. We had to wait a little at the bar, which gave us a chance to sample a local dark beer, Mastra Negra, and then we were seated with no fuss. Vegetarians, we ordered Risotto with vegetables served in a crisp cheese basket, and Eggplant Gnocchi, both excellent. Dessert was a fabulous apple tart covered with coarsely chopped almonds and served with ice-cream. The coffee was the best we've had in Montevideo. The restaurant has free internet. Do go.
