A good hotel if you want to visit Montevideo in an economic way.
The price is not absurd and the staff is very polite and helpful.

I would only mention that the airconditioning is a little bit noisy, but I think it can be fixed. Nevertheless I could rest normally.

I booked 4 nights at Hotel Babel, but could only stay there the first one – it was probably one of the worst nights of my life – the room was very, very noise – the air-conditioning made a very strange noise, the cars and trucks that passed trough the street were heard very loudly and the worst part – the air conditioning of one of the other rooms was with some kind of problem, that made it’s motor turn on and off during all night. I was able to sleep just for two ours. (we went to talk to the owner of the hotel during the night, but the only room available to exchange was very close to the entrance and with a serious cigarette scent).

As other reviews said, the bed was very hard and small (although during the reservation process they’ve said to me that it was a queen bed). The blankets and pillows smelled like cigarettes (even when I have asked for a non-smoking room), and there was no trash can in the bathroom. The breakfast was also a disaster: you pay 5 dollars per person to eat industrialized toasts, orange juice and jam.

After all these things, we decided to change hotel, and it was a wise decision. It’s a pity, because the owner is very friendly and Iberia is well located.

There are certainly more luxurious and better situated hotels in Montevideo, but I highly recommend Hotel Iberia. Other than the street noise--which you can moderate a bit by closing the aluminum window shutters and using the a/c--this place is excellent. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. The entire hotel was remarkably clean. My mattress was firm and new. (The pillows were terrible; although, I travel with my own....) The neighborhood is safe and within easy walking distance of the Rambla Argentina, Ciudad Vieja, and 18 de Julio. There are countless restaurants nearby. There's a supermarket a block away.

Given the price ($48 US per night for me), it's a fine value. Other than the noisy (but not busy) street, I'd have given this place the full five stars (for a two star hotel, that is).

This is a very basic hotel in the center of Montevideo. For a 2 star hotel the rooms are ok, but very noisy. We've been in 2 different rooms, because in the first rooms the beds were very hard, which caused pain in the back. Both of the rooms were noisy. You could hear the traffic outside, which made the nights not the best. There was a mistake with the booking, I reserved 2 rooms, yet they only reserved 1 room. Communication was confusing at times. They only speak Spanish. It's aloud to smoke in the rooms, so I recommend the non-smokers to ask for a smoke-free room.

The center is actually not the best part of Montevideo, a better location would be the old center (viejo) or pocitos. I would say, pay a bit more for a different location. No noise in the rooms is an absolute must.

The room we were allocated stank of cigarette smoke, in fact , to our surprise ashtrays were provided not only in our room, but also in the family rooms.
To access the room there were 3 flights of stairs to be navigated with a heavy suitcase without any staff willing to offer any help.
The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable, it consisted of thin matress over some wooden planks (no sommiers) .
Cleaning staff was sloppy, hair from the previous guests, in big knots were easily visible in the shower cubicle, and left there for the duration of our stay (3 nights) and toilet paper seemed to be rationed.

Yes, as previous reviews show, this is a great and a bit funky sort of hotel with very friendly staff. Their English is rather limited, but if you know Spanish or some other related languages such as Italian and French a bit, you can easily communicate with them. They´ll gladly teach you some Spanish too. As a Japanese speaker I taught one of the more eager learners some Japanese expressions. I´m contributing this message in the hotel itself after the initial night here. !Estoy aqui, Toshi aqui! Gracias.

Loved this hotel. Top reason was the staff who went out of their way to make our stay great. They called taxis, helped us order delivery, suggested great places, and were always available. Close second would be the hotel itself which is beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable and clean. New computers with internet in lobby, plus wifi. Good location for exploring Montevideo, but a few dollar taxi ride from the bus station if you are just passing through.
