“A nice choice for downtown”
Reviewed October 11, 2011

We were pleased with our choice for the close-in location to old town and downtown...we can see why some would like to be further out and closer to the beachy areas...but we wanted to see old town and be able to walk there...the hotel was nice and clean...
The owner was present when we checked in and was very helpful...the only challenge we had was that one of the front desk employees didn't speak any English and seemed to get frustrated with our lack of Spanish (the only reason I'm marking the service as average)...also...note that you have to order breakfast the night before and it's extra...that isn't communicated very well and can lead to confusion in the morning...otherwise, we had a nice stay!

Room Tip: There is no elevator! So clarify if you want a lower floor to spare yourself the stairs...our room w...

Very friendly and obliging staff, good location for town centre and old town, Good restaurants close by, We could not have wished for a more pleasant stay after a long flight from Australia. Hotel decor is very colourful with an African theme.

Nice, clean hotel located just 15 minutes walk from the old city. Safe area with plenty of shops, bars, cafes, etc within the vicinity. Taxis are cheap if you don't like to walk or wish to explore a bit further afield. The sea is about 10 mins away (if that) and the nearest recognised beach (Ramirez) is around a 30 min walk or a 10 minute taxi ride. Stunning sunset!

Free wi-fi throughout the building and a constamt supply of hot water. All good.

Room Tip: Room 5 is nice and big although there is alot of traffic noise.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Iberia for a couple of days during our last trip do Montevideo. The hotel is really simple (it´s a 2 star), with rooms a bit on the small side, but very clean (also the bathroom) and quiet (double glazed windows). Staff were nice, very accomodating, and willing to advise on things to do, where to eat, and taxi service. One important thing is that the hotel has no elevator, so be prepared to climb stairs with your luggage. As to location, it is close to the rambla (although not the most beatiful part of it, in my opinion), and to 18 de Julio Avenue, and you can walk to the old town (Ciudad Vieja and Mercado del Puerto), even at night. Not a bad location, but I definitely prefer the area of Punta Carretas, specially for the weekends. To sum up: if you are in a budget, this is your hotel. Otherwise, Punta Carretas has a number of nice hotels for you to choose from.

Hotel Iberia is a decent place to stay, being very economical, centrally located, and with satisfactory customer service. We definitely appreciate a good deal, and Iberia was just that. Nothing fancy, although they do make some effort to make the lobby, eating area, and hallways colorful and modern looking. We appreciated the free internet, but were disappointed that breakfast was extra charge (but for $58 bucks a night, you can't expect it!).

The staff did not seem overly friendly, but it could have been the language barrier (the front desk lady did not speak much English, and our Spanish is limited as well). She was, however, helpful in circling places of interest on our map, and directed us to a good little cafe and parilla.

The room was tidy, if not particularly attractive, but the mirror was cracked on the sliding closet door, and the bathroom door dragged on the floor and had to be pulled hard to close. There was a large black mark (like baggage being dragged along the wall) in our parents' room, which was unsightly, but did not impact our comfort. Little improvements could be made, but are put off to keep it economical. You get what you pay for - we did appreciate the price, and those things were mostly cosmetic.

One last thing (which might bother some) was that there was no elevator and we had to drag our suitcases up two flights of stairs (we didn't ask the staff to help, but it's possible they could if we had asked). Again, not a huge deal.

So I would recommend this if you're visiting on a budget

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor or ask for help with baggage if stairs are an issue.

Nearing the end of three weeks in Uruguay this was our last lodging. It was perfectly placed for our adventures in Montevideo. We were on the third floor, steep stairs but great room. The staff were very helpful several times., using a translator on their PC to ensure communication success. Food, culture, museums abound all around the city. The promenade is a spiritual walk along the river, well used by vacationers and locals alike. Very relaxing. The Hotel Iberia is a super place for anyone, from anywhere. Doors locked and monitored after dark.

Room Tip: I got a great deal through Expedia

The hotel, for one night, was reasonably priced & gave us a base. However,it has to be said that the City centre of Montevideo is awful. We were visiting friends & my advice would be to stay in the suburbs nearer The Ramblas area as I'm sure it's safer & has more appeal.
