“Nothing but a nice place at the old city”
Reviewed April 24, 2012

I have read good reviews about this restaurant but to me these days are gone. The place is nice and has a good frequence but the food is expensive and barely acceptable. There are much better places to go in Montevideo.

Reviewed March 25, 2012

A very good restaurant, right on the Plaza Matriz. Great food, great lunch menu. Slow service though.

“Great Place for Lunch and People Watching”
Reviewed March 22, 2012

After strolling down Sarandi, stopping in bookstores, and buying local art from street vendors, we decided to stop for lunch at an outdoor café. That’s when we arrived at Plaza Matriz and saw La Corte.

The sign over their door drew us in – “Wine is Bottled Poetry”. I say drew us in, but we actually ate outdoors on the square.

I had the Quiche de Puerro y Muzza c/ens.

My husband had Lasagne de carne, jamon, queso y espinaca.

Both included postre, café or tea, and bebida. We each had a glass of wine.
The cost was $225 (URU) each.

The food was delicious.

From our table we could see the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Cabildo, and the water fountain in the plaza, filled with vendors selling art, jewelry and antiques.
It was fun to people watch.

We’ll definitely have lunch here again on our next trip to Uruguay. They serve lunch outside until 3:00pm. Later than that, you can dine inside.

“Junk food”
Reviewed March 7, 2012

In my tourist guide (Bradt, Uruguay) La Corte is quoted as a classy restaurant. Well, these times are over. It now is a junk food joint, just like its neighbour cerveceria Matriz, or any other around. My wife and I had lunch comprising two Zillertal (quite good as usual), a menu 2 and a grilled sole. Only the cheese quake on the menu was acceptable. The rest was barely eatable. Service is friendly and professional, tough, by carefully selected signoritas. All in all 29€. McD, next door, is heaven compared to this. Do not go near this joint. It is a painful reminder that mass tourism is not exclusively positive.
