“Great Hotel with Central and Easy Access to the Sacred Valley”
Reviewed August 6, 2010

We would recommend this for anyone.... newlyweds or singles. San Augustin had a romantic and tranquil environment. Beautiful grounds, great character and charm inside and out, quality craftsmanship, and clean.

The rooms had beamed ceilings and were warmly designed. The location was central and convenient for seeing the Sacred Valley. The food was excellent, reasonably priced, and the service was fantastic.

The concierge was helpful in calling several cab companies for comparing prices as we hired a driver for the entire day to see the Sacred Valley. (Approximately $35 USD.)

The courtyard had a very peaceful environment with a view of the mountains beyond.

This hotel is very nice and its surroundings are beautiful. The rooms seems like they have been recently built. The rooms are large and very comfy. There is a swimming pool but I dont really think anyone would be crazy enough to jump in there in the winter. Everyone was very friendly (staff) with us. The only thing I have to say was horrible was the quality of the food we had at the restaurant. That really has to be improved. There really isnt much of anywhere to go at night and its very dark so walking around the small town doesnt seem like a good idea. If you need a place to stay (rest) this place is great, for example if youre on a day trip to ollantaytambo or if youre travelling to machu picchu the next day, that way you save about an hour and a half of the trrain ride if u were to leave from Cuzco.

the inside of this place was much nicer. The rooms had hardwood floors and the bathroom looked like it had been recently redone. The room was very clean. We originally were assigned a room with 2 twin beds. When we asked to have a room with one double bed, we got a corner unit which was almost twice the size of our original room (there was no price difference btwn the rooms). Our new 2nd floor unit had a sitting room and high vaulted ceilings. The gardens outside in the courtyards were well kept. I saw someone tending to them almost every time I walked outside. The morning breakfast buffet was decent. Hot items included: fried eggs, scrambled eggs, fried yucca, and pieces of fried chicken. Cold items included: fruit, some cereals, deli meats, cheese, and bread. The dinner menu didn't have much selection. Since it was somewhat of a far walk to the city center, it was our only option when we felt lazy. The ladies at the front desk were helpful. The only negative about this hotel was that they forgot to pick me up from the Cusco airport (about an hr and half away)... NOT COOL. I had to haggle with one of the many shady taxi drivers to give me a good rate. It should cost around 40 USD (which is what the hotel charges... had they actually picked me up).

Don't expect a whole lot here, but a good, basic 3-star property in the Sacred Valley. Hotel is a bit old, rooms are a bit spartan, beds a bit hard, but it filled the need for a base of operations for two nights. Lots of big tour groups use this hotel, and the restaurant service staff were pressed at dinner to handle the capacity.

We stayed 5 nights at this hotel and found the room to be very clean, comfortable and spacious and the staff very accommodating. We day tripped out and the hotel made our taxi arrangements each time. Most of our meals were eaten at the hotel and the food was good to excellent. There is not much to see or do in Urubamba but we found it to be a good central location for our purposes. The bathroom was very nice with a deep tub and plenty of hot water. There is a bar area with a pool table; however there are 2 pool balls missing and the table is somewhat lopsided! We had massages which were cheap and wonderful and made use of the sauna. It felt wonderful the day after our trek to Machu Picchu. There is a nice pool area but the water is quite cool this time of year. The front desk said that the French are the only visitors who choose to swim when the water is so cold. If you are going to Machu Picchu, you will need to take a 20 minute cab ride to Ollantaytambo and catch the train there. The general price for the taxi ride to Ollantaytambo was 20 soles which is about 7.00 dollars.

We made use of the laundry service which was quick and affordable.

There was cable TV and we found movies and shows in English at various times throughout the stay.

Breakfast is included in the price of the say and there is something for everyone. Fresh fruit, rolls, toast, eggs, various jams and preserves and cereals.

We were supposed to stay another night but decided to go back to Cusco a day early. The front desk made arrangements for us to stay at the San Agustin International in Cusco and gave us credit for the night for which we had already paid. We thought that was awesome!

The only negative was that the computer did not work so we had to visit internet cafes. I think that WiFi was available in the hotel. We didn't go to an internet cafe in Urubamba but did in Pisac and Ollantaytambo. These are the best places in which to make phone calls as well. It is very expensive to call from the hotel. 16 minutes to the states cost 32.00 dollars. Using the call shop cost less than 50 cents per minute.

We had a great stay (and trip) at this hotel in Urubamba. Urumbamba is not the most charming town in the Sacred Valley, but it is very convenient for a multi-day trip. If you're staying in Urumbamba, I would definitely recommend this hotel - it's in the center of many of the ruins and charming towns. If you're doing just one night in the Sacred Valley? Then, I would recommend Ollanta or Aguas Caliente.

Our room was spacious and spotless - we had a corner room - I believe an upgraded Superior Room - that a nice view overlooking a beautiful, flower-filled courtyard, backdropped with large majestic mountains. The linens and blankets were clean, cozy, and very comfortable - beds are a big thing for me. The shower, truly, may have been the best shower I've had on my frequent travels - large, strong, and HOT.

The staff was very friendly. The front desk person spoke okay English, but the manager's English was excellent.

The restaurant food was good quality - fresh eggs and an assortment of other items every morning. They offered and will set up the entire buffet as early as you ask. We left for MP 5:00 and breakfast was ready, as promised, at 4:45!

The street that this is located on is a bit "rustic" and dusty, but when you walk on the property - wow! Beautiful courtyards, fountain, exceptional flowers. Beautiful!

There are two San Augustin Hotels in Urubamba, this one and the Monesterio. We had lunch at the Monesterio, and it was excellent, but didn't stay there. This hotel (non-monesterio) was quite nice for an overnight stay, with a pool which looked clean and inviting (but our suits were left behind in Cusco to await our return from Macchu Pichu). The room was clean and pleasant, and our plug in heater worked quite well in keeping the room comfortable during a chilly night. The grounds of the hotel are well kept also. The major downside to the hotel was that the breakfast was not good. There was a lot of food offered, but it was almost uniformly bad, from the coffee to the cereal to the bread products. In contrast to the front desk personnel, who were helpful and pleasant, the man running the dining room for breakfast was surly and unpleasant. Perhaps he had a bad morning, but it soured our short stay.

  • Liked — Nice grounds, clean rooms
  • Disliked — Bad breakfast
