“Beautiful, Peaceful and Unbelievable Service”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

I have only been awed by service in a hotel a few times in my life. This was one of them. Rio Sagrado is situated along the Rio Sagrado river in the Sacred Valley. It has a perfect balance of nature and accommodations.
We stayed here for three nights as base camp to explore the sites of Sacred Valley before embarking upon Machu Picchu.
The staff was there to arrange everything possible. In fact, it is difficult to arrange trip details in Peru from the US. I would recommend asking the hotel for help. Britney is very helpful. The entire staff was friendly, well trained and genially cares for the guests. Flores, the Manager has done a superb job in creating a culture within this oasis.
You won’t be disappointed.

The hotel is an oasis. It sits in a valley with rooms having balconies overlooking a peaceful river with mountains behind. There are numerous flowers throughout the property. The room itself has a very comfortable bed and pillows. The shower is wrapped in glass looking out at the valley and mountains. With no TV but an ipod docking station, it is a relaxing respite from touring. The restaurant was excellent- the trout, chicken and sauces, all exceeded expectations. The only problem was that our room was overrun by small ants. We changed rooms but the second room also had ants- not as bad- but still- waking up with 8 dead ants in your bed and having them walking all over the counter was not what I would expect at a high end hotel. The staff has limited english skills and don't expect a full service hotel experience. However, for being in the middle of nowhere it was a welcome sight.

On our August trip to Peru we stayed at this 5 star hotel while exploring Peru's Sacred Valley. The one hour drive from Cusco was pleasant as we descended in altitude to the valley. This is a beautiful area of Peru with many wonderful sites to visit. We are so glad we spent 2 nights there instead of rushing through the Sacred Valley to get to Machu Picchu as many travelers do. The hotel consists of several beautifully landscaped buildings all connected by walkways. The El Huerto restaurant has it's own building and serves incredible Peruvian cuisine from local ingredients. . The spa which is being enlarged offers great treatments. Bring your books and electronic devices because there are no televisions in the rooms. We hope to return to this little oasis in the middle of Peru's Sacred Valley. You are in for a treat if you stay here.

Room Tip: The rooms with a walkout terrace have great views of the Urubamba River

We stayed at the Rio Sagrado as the final leg in our 12 day Peru vacation and couldn't have been more pleased. We were ready to wind down and relax after a very fun, but exhausting schedule. As arranged we were met at the train station by a driver I set up through the hotel.
The location of this hotel is not exactly in any town, but rather 20 minutes outside of Ollytatambo.
The beauty and grounds of this hotel is remarkable. Situated on the river, with views of the mountains and their lovely grounds, it is truely an oasis. After check in, we were given a personal tour of the entire facility, and then taken to our room. To our surprise, we had been upgraded to a huge 3 bedroom villa.
We were speechless how amazing it was! Each room was impeccably decorated with large modern bathrooms, and every room had large windows to enjoy the views.
This would be the perfect place for a couples or family stay. The kitchen was well equipped
(even had an espresso maker) there was a large dining room table and a wonderful stacked stone wood burning fireplace in the comfortable living room. It also had a spacious covered front porch....a very relaxing place to sit and read.
The entire staff was attentive, friendly and tries very hard to make their guests happy. The lunch we ordered to our room was tasty and delivered in 20 minutes. The dinner we had in the dining room was very good, too. We could actually see the chef cooking our steaks. I will agree with the other reviewers that the menu was a bit limited, but we were told by our waitress that the chef would accommodate any special requests.
The morning we checked out, we were getting a little nervous that the driver I had hired to take us to Cuzco to catch our flight was not going to show, and the manager went above and beyond the call of duty to get a hold of the tour company and assured us he would get us there on time. Many thanks for this!
If you are looking for a hotel that is situated in a town, this is not the place for you. But it is in an ideal location to take lots of day trips then return back to a luxurious restful haven.
Would definitely return again.

Room Tip: families would love staying the villa

We stayed in the 3 bedroom villa (Villa Orquidea) for 1 night before heading to Machu Picchu. The grounds are beautiful. The hotel is right on the river and thus the views are spectacular. The location is perfect to adjust to the altitude and overcome any jetlag. We were a party of 5 and we all got massages - which were wonderful and well priced ($45.00 or so for a 30 minutes) The spa has a glass wall so while sitting in the jacuzzi we had a view of the mountains and river. Our villa exceeded our expectations. It had a living room with fireplace (which the staff came and lit for us at the precise time we requested). It also has a kitchen which we didn't use and a lovely dining room. There is a glass wall /sliding doors opening up to a patio. There are 3 bedrooms, all with a great view of the river, grounds, and mountains. There is a master bedroom with a king bed on the 2nd floor. There is a sitting area and bathroom. The bathroom shower had a glass wall - so you could see out, yet was private too. The other 2 bedrooms were on the ground floor and each had 2 beds (1 b/r had full beds, the other had 2 twins)...each had it's own beautiful bathroom - again with glaspanoramic windows looking out to the grounds, river, and mountains.

We ate in the dining room, the cerviche was outstanding!

We learned we couldn't take our bags on the Vistadome to Aguas Calientes and just needed to carry a back pack (or keep it to 11 pounds or something like that). The Rio Sagrado stored our luggage for us at no extra cost. So what we did was pack an overnight bag using our backpacks. We then went to Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu - upon our return, our driver swung by the Rio Sagrado so we could grab our bags, we then drove on to Cuzco. So, again, their service was impeccable.

Cons: The only thing I thought I would mention is that these little fruit flies got in our villa. They were in the kitchen and bathrooms primarily. It was impossible to keep them out as the main door (glass) doesn't seal tightly to the wall. I have to say though it was no big deal, yet since I'm writing a review, I felt I needed to divulge this information.

I would stay at this property again in a heartbeat.....for a longer length of time. It truly was a wonderful experience. If anyone has specific questions, I'd be glad to try and answer them!

Dear BellaClaire 429
Thank you for your complete review here on Trip Advisor.
I apologise for the inconvenience of the fruit flies, they are harmless but still can be anoying. I can tell you that both villas will have the sliding doors changed into fixed, sealed windows (floor to ceilin) with a large French door as an entrance. This will keep out mosquitos even more in the future.
In any case, I hope to have you all back to enjoy the vill with just the 5 of you...no flies...

My wife and I just returned from spending two nights at the Rio Sagrado and can simply say it was one of the most beautiful hotels with outstanding food and service we have ever stayed at .....and we have traveled all over Europe and North America.

Nestled in one of the most beautiful spots overlooking the river, our room was beautifully appointed as were all the other rooms throughout the hotel.

We were very pleased with every aspect of our stay and highly commend Floris (the General Manager) for his excellent job in hiring and training an outstanding staff!

We highly recommend Rio Sagrado to anyone who wants to avoid the crowds in Cusco and stay at one of the finest hotels in Peru.

Room Tip: Junior Suites are larger than regular rooms and have spectacular views and private patios as well.

I have just spent three nights at Rio Sagrado in a Junior Suite overlooking the stunning river and it was just incredible. The staff were consistently delightful: attentive but not at all intrusive. I actually was quite ill with altitude sickness at first and I indulged in the spa with hot stone massages, salt exfoliations, acclimatizing head & shoulder massages, and a reflexology treatment. The masseurs had magic hands and the treatments were divine! When I mentioned I'd been sick the staff responded immediately and I found a tank of oxygen and a llama hot water bottle on my bed when I returned from the spa. The nightly turndown service is a nice extra. We had zero bugs and really I don't see how they could get in when there are screens to pull down. The shower was luxurious and the bath and body products were lovely. The meals were really tasty though my appetite wasn't really up to eating much so I missed out on the Friday evening BBQ and Pisco tasting :-( Everything was perfect. I've already said to my friend I absolutely will be back again!! Thank you!!
