Every time we go to Urubamba, which is often, we cannot leave without going to eat at this excellent restaurant,
This time we went for new years and had a 7 dish degustation menu which was excellent. Two of our group are vegetarians and the chef Pio made special and very enjoyable dishes for them.
This is one of our favourite places in Peru. Do not miss it !

The owner of the hotel we were staying at insisted we try Huacatay, and boy was he right. The restaurant is hidden away on a side street, and completely unprepossessing from the exterior. The interior is better, in a generic-fancy-restaurant way.

But it's the food that sets El Huacatay apart. Everything we had there was astonishingly good. Not just because it was prepared well, but because the dishes had surprising combinations of ingredients that complimented each other quite well.

We had an appetizer of thin-sliced rare alpaca covered with a tomato jelly that was just amazing. The salad had fried sesame seed-coated cheese wedges. The meat was spiced to perfection. It was just amazing.

The prices aren't particularly steep (by American standards) although the drinks did seem to be overpriced. However, the prices aren't low, either. Expect to drop $40 to $80 for a well-apportioned dinner for two, including appetizer, salad, mains, and drinks.

We just got back from the El Huacatay restaurant and I have to say that the food and service was really great.
We got back from our day tour and the restaurant in our hotel (Sol y Luna at Urubamba) was closed, 3pm and we had to go and eat somewhere. I knew this restaurant from the posts in TA so we decited to give it a shot. What can I say, the food was really really nice, excellent value and not to mention that was really cheap.
We payed for 2 person, one starter, two main dishes, one desert, a bber, a cofee and a bottle of water round 33 US dollars plus tips while we payed for our hotel restaurant the twice as much and didint have dessert...
I suggest to get there by a taxi or moto taxi since it is not in the main street.
Enjoy!!!

In all respects this restaurant would rate highly anywhere; that it happens to be situated on an out-of-the-way side street in the little Sacred Valley town of Urubamba makes it as much of an anomaly as it is a treat. The food is Nueva Andena (dunno if that's an established term, but it describes what we ate): local and traditional ingredients used in interesting and inventive (but not outlandish) ways. The cooking and presentation are as expert as one would expect in a top-notch big-city restaurant. The dining room, bar, and patio are all attractively decorated and comfortable. Even the background music sets this place apart: none of that ubiquitous pan-flute muzak here. Considering all of which the cost is very reasonable.
