“Lovely courtyard, helpful staff, rustic bedrooms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2010

We were here one night as part of a tour. The courtyard is adorable, although the plants need a little TLC. The staff were extremely accommodating--waking us up and preparing breakfast for our group outside of their normal opening/breakfast serving times. The location was very convenient, and the rustic, cozy rooms made for a good night's sleep. Also, best shower of the trip.

Someone mentioned banging on the door--if you find yourself locked out, there is a *doorbell* on the right hand side of the door. It looks like a lightswitch.

We stayed 2 separate days seeing 3 different rooms. On returning from Machu Picchu before 9PM (tired and dusty) it took 10 minutes of loud banging for someone to open the door ....no apology. All other places we stayed in 3 weeks in Peru were immaculate with helpful staff. Flowerpots were unwatered and flowers barely hanging on.Breakfast was a stale roll with meager jam, no fruit or juice. The shared WC had no toilet seat, no TP, and no soap! Our MP return evening our room had no towels, no soap, no apology! Look elsewhere in Ollanta. This place COULD be a gem with effort. There are wooden floors that haven't seen wax in years. A great potential spot is wasted by lackluster staffing.

I had confirmed a reservation with credit card and passport information, received confirmation from the hostal that our rooms were booked. When we arrived as the sun was setting they had given our rooms away to someone else and offered no apologies or assistance. We had to get a much more expensive hotel elsewhere since most places were full. Very irritating, and they really didn't seem to care. It was obvious they knew they had done something wrong since when I stated my room, they knew we had reserved a double and a single, but said that they were no longer available.

We arrived at Las Orquideas after a long and tiring day hiking Machu Picchu and taking trains. The rooms were very cozy and clean. Even though the hostel is located right on the main road to the train station, we were not disturbed at all by street noise as the town shuts down pretty much completely after dark. The hostel is a square shape with rooms around a courtyard. When you stand on the balcony you feel engulfed by the surrounding mountains which made it very beautiful. There was someone at the desk at all times to let you in to the hostel so the area was very safe. It got very chilly outside at night because we were there in the winter (and of course, in the mountains) but the rooms were not cold and the showers were amazing and totally relaxing after a day of serious hiking. In the morning they served a pretty great breakfast with multiple courses which is included in the price of your room. Overall a pretty good value for the money. Just a little more expensive than a budget hostel but worth the few extra dollars.

We stayed for one night in May 2008- a double with private ensuite bathroom (yes, with hot water!). The rooms are simple, but comfortable. The owner and staff were very friendly. The courtyard is very charming and gave the whole place a very relaxed feel. The hotel is in a great location because it's not on a busy street with cars that have smelly exhaust are. The room can be cold at night, but that seemed pretty standard in many Peruvian hotels (at least the ones I stayed in). Definitely recommended!

My wife and I stayed here for one night. I agree with most of the other reviewers - this is good standard accommodation at a very good price. Rooms are on two levels and are arranged around a courtyard. We were put on the ground floor. I was a bit nervous as in these older places if someone noisy is placed in the room above you it can make for an unpleasant stay. But the hostel was clearly under-utilised the night we were there - maybe two or three other rooms in use, and no one directly above us. So no problem - in fact a very good sleep.
The hostel has a perfect location - a few minutes walk from the railway station, the central square, and the ruins. Transport to and from the train station travels on the road immediately outside the masonry wall separating the hostel from the road. While this is busy during the day when trains are coming and going, it is not a problem at night because there aren't any trains. You may be disturbed early in the morning, though, either by the transport going to meet the early trains or by other guests getting up to catch the early trains.
We only had one problem with our stay - when we went to use the shower in the evening after returning from dinner at a nice restaurant up the road we found there was no hot water. We contacted reception who were quite concerned. After disappearing for a couple of minutes the lady returned to say it should be okay now but wait 5 minutes before using. We actually waited 10 minutes and then tried the water - the hot water was only lukewarm, but sufficient to have a shower. Unfortunately, just as I was finishing my shower the lukewarm water ran out. So not willing to face very cold water my wife decided to wait until the morning and try the water then. As it turned out, in the morning the water was very hot and plenty of it. We suspect that they had simply forgotten to turn on the hot water system for our room when we arrived.
As mentioned by others, breakfast was basic (bread rolls, jam, and tea) but given the room rate being given we thought getting anything was a bonus. There are plenty of cafes up the road if you want a full breakfast.
Notwithstanding the hiccup with the hot water, we would certainly stay here again.

Stayed here as a family of three in the upstairs room #7 with 4 single beds. The hostal has a nice, rustic air to it. Ceilings are exposed wood beam, facilities are basic. No heat. Beds are comfortable, plenty of lighting, good hot water 24/7. You may hear some dogs barking at night, but in the distance. Included breakfast is no frills, but they can make you eggs at an extra charge.

Staff and the family that run the establishment are very friendly and helpful. The daughter works at the train station and can help you with train details and Machu Picchu guide arrangements (I had some price conflict in this, so I'd recommend arranging your own guide directly). Their box lunch that they packed us for MP was great. We had great fun eating those lunches sitting on top of the world at the top of HuchuyPicchu (one of the highlights of our whole trip).

The soothing sound of the river that flows by this hotel, the nice little garden courtyard where you can spend some quiet moments, the large spacious rooms, and the excellent proximity to the train station and town center (8 & 5 min walk respectively) and most of all the low, low prices make this an EXCELLENT choice. We thoroughly enjoyed our two days there.
