This was the most amazing hotel. It is beautiful and peaceful. The rooms are fantastic and the restaurant is one of the best we've eaten in.
The staff, particularly Sergio and Natalia, were absolutely fantastic. They made us feel at home and made sure to take care of us,even helping arrange transportation and checking on our arival at our next destination.
We can't wait to come back!

The breakfast this morning was one of the best I have ever had anywhere. And to think it was included in the room fee. So many choices, cooked to order with a true Peruvian flair. The only negative is that the hotel is on the train tracks and very noisy. Bring your ear plugs. Can't wait treat here tonight and again tomorrow morning.

Room Tip: Go for the top floor and a room farthest away from the tracks.

If you want the perfect DIY tour of Machu Picchu, this is the place to base your stay. First of all, you can avoid the crowded atmosphere and high altitude of Cuzco by having Sergio or Natalia arrange a ride directly from the airport to their wonderful B&B. Instead of suffering altitude sickness at 11,200 feet in Cuzco, you are whisked immediately to 9,100 feet in Ollantaytambo. This is the same height as the Machu Picchu site, so it's as high as you need to go to adjust to the altitude unless you are hiking over passes to get to Machu Picchu. Secondly, Sergio or Natalia will be happy to arrange private tours of the Sacred Valley with top notch tour guides at very reasonable prices. Third, the B&B is actually AT the Ollantaytambo train station - the last train stop before Machu Picchu and only a 90 minute train ride away. So you can get right on the train to Machu Picchu from your front door early in the morning and be delivered back to the hotel at the end of a long day trip. Believe me, staying in Ollantaytambo is much nicer than staying in Aguas Calientes! Finally, and perhaps most convenient of all, the hotel hosts what is probably the best restaurant in the Sacred Valley. The food was so outstanding that we never looked elsewhere during our four night stay. We even had the pachamada lunch, an outdoor meal cooked on hot rocks. What an amazing experience!

The only complication to such a DIY tour of Machu Picchu is the fact that the hotel is not licensed to obtain train tickets, bus tickets, or site passes to Machu Picchu. But we were able to arrange those through Andina Travel at a very reasonable price and have the tickets delivered to the hotel reception.

We found that El Albergue was the perfect haven for avoiding the packaged tours and high altitude of Cuzco. We were particularly pleased that our tours were personal and tailored to our exact needs.

Room Tip: Rooms 15 and 16 are on the second floor with a great view of the mountains. They are away from the t...

Can't say enough wonderful things about this place. Fantastic service all around, but I reserve a special shout out to Sergio, who patiently answered all of my emails. The hotel is lovely, charming, and conveniently located right next to the train station. The food is outstanding. We rarely eat at hotel restaurants, but the food was so delicious that we dined here 2 of 3 nights. Don't miss the opportunity to book a Panchamanca lunch and tour of their organic farm - 70% of what is grown there ends up on the table. Oh, and their brownies are to die for. The hotel also arranged for a driver and boxed lunches for our day-long tour of Pisac, Moray and Maras/Salineas. You can purchase a ticket for 70 soles that gets you into 4 major sites in 2 days, or if you have more time in the area, you can buy a ticket for 130 soles that allows access to 16 ruins and museums. Finally, if you are deciding stay between Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, go with the latter and stay at this hotel.

ps. warning - the septic system is delicate; the hotel asks that you put your waste paper in the trash can, and not flush it in the toilet.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 13, which has 1 queen and 1 twin beds. Spacious and quiet.

We spent three nights and got a wonderful sense of Ollantaytambo & the Sacred Valley we wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. The hotel is like a warm hug from a loving family member. For us foodie travelers, the food in the attached restaurant is nothing short of amazing, and better than any supposedly high-end food we've had in other spots.

The staff went out of their way to accommodate our requests, and offer but don't pressure add-ons. We did the "pachamanca", a lunch in their organic farm, for $35 each. Fresh lamb, cuy, and duck from their farm were cooked with local potatoes and herbs, served with fresh cut vegetables. 100% of the meal came from on-site, and was beyond compare.

We also indulged in an in-room massage for $50/hr. For both of us it was well done and very helpful to work our tired hiking muscles.

The beds are firm, but very comfortable. The window coverings keep the room extra dark, so be sure to bring an alarm clock, or it could be noon before you get up!

A path from the hotel leads directly to the open air market and the entry to the Ollantaytambo fortress ruins and avoids all the traffic and vendors on the main roads. The path also allows for views of local farm along the way.

Despite the train stop right in front, it never seems too loud or intrusive, and only adds to the charming ambiance. Leaving the hotel will be easy, as we can just climb aboard from the hotel's front door.

A perfect stay.

We stayed there last week and have only the best things to say about it! First of all, the reservation process was flawless. Sergio was great - responsive to all of our questions and requests including getting our tickets to Machu Picchu. He was at the front desk when we checked in and made sure that everything was in order. Our room was fantastic - #12, in the back on the 2nd floor. High ceilings, beautiful bathroom, and incredible view of Mt. Victoria out our windows. Perfect! We loved the energy of the location, too - being at the train station! One morning at breakfast, we met the owner, Joaquin, who couldn't have nicer and more concerned that all was OK with our stay. His mother's and brother's artwork hangs everywhere and is wonderful. It's a perfect place to stay!

Room Tip: We loved #12, in the back on the 2nd floor

We stayed at El Albergue the night before hopping the train to Agua Calientes. The hotel is literally located at the train station which shaves off a great chunk of time in the morning when catching your train! The staff here are wonderful and helpful and the restaurant is also a delight. The rooms are centered around a large garden which is peaceful and serene. It can get chilly in the evenings (depending upon the time of year) but they provide heaters in each room which help to warm things up a bit. I think this hotel is every bit what one would expect in a tiny town like Ollantaytambo. It's small, family run, and takes pride in their service. Their breakfast in the morning is great. They offer to make omelettes, eggs, pancakes, etc. They also have fresh fruit and cereal. They can pack you a lunch to take up to Machu Picchu if you'd like. Their happy hour is 2 for 1 piscos, and they are delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here, and highly recommend it to those who enjoy a few extra minutes of morning sleep and a bit less stress when it comes to catching the train!
