“Excellent location, excellent service, stunning views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2014 via mobile

A gem of a place. Fantastic location, less than 5 mins to the train station (important if you're getting the 7am or earlier train to Machu Picchu!) And a short pleasant walk into the delightful town of Ollantaytambo (I'd definitely recommend staying here before and probably after a day trip to Machu Picchu - Cusco is too far away, Aguas Calientes is pretty horrible, and Ollantaytambo is well worth a day trip in its own right).

The hotel is clean, comfortable and has stunning views of the Sacred Valley. The service was excellent - attentive, friendly and helpful, the manager went out of his way to help get a taxi back to Cusco quite late in the evening. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting MP / Sacred Valley

My husband and I spent a total of 9 nights at Tunupa Lodge in Feb/March 2014 - we loved it! We had a big room with a double bed, the shower was always hot, great wifi, and our balcony had a beautiful view of the mountains. The staff were friendly and even though we don't speak much Spanish we were able to communicate with them anything we needed. We also loved the location - not too far from the plaza (about a 10 minute walk) but far enough that it was quiet at night. The grounds are beautiful too - flowers, outdoor seating and tables, and farmland. I also loved the sound of the river nearby. There are two llamas and two sheep that live on the property and I loved seeing them each day. The owners also have a little puppy, we think his name is Pepito, and he was adorable! A great place to stay in Ollantaytambo and we will be back!

We have just arrived a day ago and it's very nice, very clean, has a nice Wi-Fi connection, very cozy, the perfect location to spend time while you're not visiting touristic places.
Has different room options, and a lot of rooms, quite safe too.

It's not in the center of town and it's not next to the train station, but halfway between the two. That means you have a bit more breathing room and unobstructed views of snow capped mountains from the lawn, but you do need to walk for 5-10 minutes to get to anything--or else get a ride. Our room was basic but large, airy, and clean. The shower and the bed were perfectly fine. The breakfast unremarkable. While we were there, one of us became very ill. The staff kindly called a doctor to come to our room. They also made no qualms about letting us have a very late check-out that day.

We stayed at Tunupa Lodge. It is located on the main road to the Railway station about 200 metres from the station and 200metres from the main town. We booked a room from a booking website that charges $10 the rooms were $50 per night we stayed 4 nights. We communicated by email and they organised a taxi to pick us up from Cuzco airport. We could have organised it ourselves but for 100 soles and it is 66 kms plus the driver stopped at many places for us to take photos. The return journey to Cuzco we travelled by collectivo from near the railway station and it cost only 20 soles for two of us, I bought another seat to place our hand luggage as we had some fragile ceramic pieces otherwise they would throw them on top. The driver regularly honks people till he fills the 10 seater van but the price was excellent. The rooms were spacious and the bathroom clean. They had a buffet breakfast with a choice of scrambled eggs or banana pancakes plus fruit juice, fruit, cereal and tea or coffee. They have free wifi and a TV located in a lounge area. We had a notebook so used that to watch movies. The location is very quiet amongst the cornfields and the only noise was the water running down a channel on the property boundary. I usually drink water at all places but they advised me to drink bottled water. I looked around and the town is old and didn’t seem to have water purification. I walked through the old narrow streets where often there was a water channel allowing water to flow through the town. The buildings were old I would say that they have been there for hundreds of years so it was interesting to walk along them. The main square has the most action with lots of restaurants to choose from. The fortress is also very interesting although we didn’t go this time. I did enter through the exit and had a wander around late in the day

We stayed here after our day at Machu Picchu. Our room was lovely and quiet (we opted for a superior double, which was quite large and had a queen sized bed) and had a view of the mountains. It was also clean, and hot water was very good. The trains don't run very late, and once the last train left at 9pm there was no traffic at all on the road. We weren't bothered by noise from other guests, other than hearing some trekkers head off early (no big deal). I was happy to read in one of the other reviews here that a large family group was told to be quiet, it shows that the lodge is committed to ensuring that all guests have a peaceful time.

The breakfast buffet is excellent. The staff are all friendly, though not all great English speakers. Having a bit of Spanish is not essential, you could get by without it, but it is appreciated if you make an effort.

If you're not bothered about getting into Machu Picchu first thing in the morning, you should consider basing yourself in Ollantaytambo instead of Aguas Calientes. There is good early train service to MP, and staying here means you can avoid the lousy hotels and restaurants in AG, which is a dump.
