“Stunning location & first class staff”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Sol for one night in April. Unfortunately the hotel was full for our second night but the hotel arranged for us to stay in their other hotel (Hostal Iskay - see separate review) and moved our cases and even escorted us to the Hostal in the evening.
Hotel Sol is perfectly located near to the main square for eating out, shopping or just watching the world go by. It is less than a 10 minute walk from the train station to. We had a large room with a balcony overlooking the river with a view across to the Inca ruins and mountains. Completely breathtaking. The room was spotlessly clean with a large bed, fresh bedlinen and towels.
There is no TV in the room (brilliant) but if you really wanted to watch there is one in the lounge area. There was wifi available but not a great reception.
We didn't have any breakfast at the hotel as we were out early to go to Machu Picchu but they gave us a packed meal instead which was more than sufficient and in fact did us for lunch too!
The staff were incredibly helpful and polite. We left our camera in a taxi returning to Cusco and
on the off chance emailed the hotel in case it somehow made its way back to them (by photo recognition!). Amazingly it did and Wilbert put us in touch with the taxi driver who delivered the camera to our hotel in Cusco the next day - thank you again :)

We would highly recommend this hotel - reasonably priced, perfect location and spotless.

The hotel is well located we particularly appreciated the view from the balcony of our room of the Inca Terraces. The hotel itself is quite pleasant with sitting areas with tea available and a small garden overlooking the river. The room was a reasonable size and the bed comfortable. The staff were mostly indifferent especially those in the dinning area at breakfast. The breakfast itself was poor, the worst we encountered during our stay in Peru. On our second morning we arrived to find little left and had to ask for juice, glasses and cake which never appeared. We eventually gave up as did other guests. The dining room would benefit from brighter table cloths and a more attractive presentation of food.

We stayed here in a group in February 2013. This hotel was wonderful, it was clean, comfortable, the staff were friendly, the rooms were spacious, they had fairly fast internet which was hard to come by in the area. I had been traveling through Peru for a number of weeks by the time I arrived here, and this was one of the best hotels I stayed in for a really reasonable price. The water takes a while to heat, but it's very hot when it does warm - also unusual for the area. It's close to everything, the breakfast was very nice, compared to other places we stayed at, they served eggs and pancakes, and fresh fruit and yoghurt, the coffee is different, like many hotels in Peru. This place was a welcome wonder when we really needed it. Great value for money.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the river, they have beautiful rooms and a little balcony...

We stayed at the Hotel Sol for 2 nights on our trip to the Cusco region. We picked the Hotel Sol based on the reviews on TA (we usually pick all hotels that way!). It is a nice little hotel: clean, with large rooms and bathrooms, and it is within a short walk from things like the central market and the train station. The amenities are slim: the breakfast was "meh" with lackluster coffee and there are the most basic toiletries. Important: You can borrow a hair dryer from the front desk - just ask! We didn't have any issues with the hot water that some others did, but we were there during the less-crowded rainy season.

But the view is lovely - particularly if you shell out the bit extra for the ruins/river view rooms. You can step out on your balcony and watch the afternoon tourists climb the ruins. We noticed that there is also a pair of (I guess) pet sheep living across the river from the hotel behind some houses (no worries - no sheep smells).

And the owner and staff here are very helpful and will answer all your questions about the town. The owner actually arranged a private car with driver and (English-speaking) guide for us to explore a number of Sacred Valley stops on our way back to Cusco. That was fantastic!

So bottom line: This is not a fancy place, but if you want to feel safe and relatively comfortable and have helpful staff, try this place.

Another note: Free WIFI! We were actually able to stream Netflix and watch a pre-bed movie.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for the ruins/river view rooms.

We stayed here the night before and night after Machu Picchu. Room is basic but was as expected. Beds were firm but we had no problem sleeping after hiking around all day. Bathroom was large and we had no issue with hot water. They had bagged breakfasts ready for us in the morning since we were leaving at 6:00 am for the train. Breakfast was good and plentiful. All the staff, Wilbur, Freida, and Lluc were all very helpful. We kept our luggage at hotel while spending next day, night and following day in Aguas Calientes. Allowed us to use their phone to call airlines. They called a particular driver we wanted for trip to Pisac and Cusac and arranged for the pick-up at the hotel. Location to the Ollayntaytambo ruins (and the ruins opposite them, the graineries and more) is excellent.

Room Tip: Upstairs river view rooms are worth the extra cost if you are going to spend any time at all at the...

I had higher expectations of this hotel based on the reviews. I understand Peru is a relatively poor country and I wasn't expecting a resort, but the hotel amenities and infrastructure were more basic than I had expected.

Pros:
1. the view! We had a room overlooking the ruins and right by the river. It was great and I don't think you could get a better view of Olly.
2. Location! It is a 1-2 minute walk from the ruins, same amount of distance from the square and a 5 - 10 minute easy walk from the train station
3. Friendly and courteous front desk staff

Cons:
1. The amenities were too basic, e.g. the shampoo, towels were on the thin side, etc..
2. Infrastructure: the toilet got clogged on our second day and we spent a long time trying to flush it down until we called maintenance (who promptly arrived and fixed the problem)
3. Breakfast: I don't know if I EVER had as poor a "breakfast" in any hotel. Stale bread, not so good coffee, no cheese, no olives, no eggs, no decent pastries, etc... uninviting and non-filling
4. No oxygen at the hotel: My son had mild altitude sickness upon arrival and we had to purchase it from the drug store next door. The receptionist was kind and caring enough to accompany me to the store to help me purchase it and figure out how to use it, though. so I am thankful to him.
5. Odor: OK, I have a very sensitive nose - there was a strange odor in the hotel; not a dirty smell, but some sort of unpleasant odor. The same odor was in the Puka Rumi restaurant, so not sure if this is a general Olly problem.

Final word: it is bearable for a few days given the kind staff and location but if someone recommends another hotel heartily, I wouldn't hold you back.

We spent the night before & the night after visiting Machu Picchu here. We were a party of 2 and had a room with 3 beds - which gave us plenty of room to spread out. If the sound of the river won't bother you at night, definitely request a room with a view of the ruins over the river. it didn't bother us at all, and the view is wonderful. The room was clean, large, had a little balcony over the river, and the hotel is conveniently located to visit the ruins; it was about a 10 minute walk to the train station. While this is not important to everyone, they have hair dryers at the front desk - the best one I've ever had in a foreign country (it didn't 'die' after a couple of minutes). The staff at the front desk was friendly, and the owner was very helpful & accommodating when I emailed him numerous times before our arrival. The only 'complaints' we had were that the beds are a little hard, and the light in the bathroom is weak and not near the sink/mirror. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the ruins over the river.
