Had an Awesome time back in May of 2011. Wouldn't give up the experience for anything. Amazing trail, incredible ruins, beautiful view, and llamas scattered the whole way through. Even got to see some wild chinchillas! Highly recommend this trip if you love hiking.

Definitely the best way to get to Machu Picchu. The guides are kind and knowledgeable, served food was great too.
Hike gets tough on the second day but overall, it is worth it. You will have more application for Machu Picchu.

We booked a 4 day Inca Jungle Tour in Cusco with a company called Peru Golden. Our bikes did not work properly, our room at one of the hostel we stayed in had mold and we did way less zip-lining than the other tours. The worst part was though that they messed up getting us the tickets to enter Machu Picchu and the train tickets back to Cusco. We ended up having to stand outside an office in Aguas Calientes for an hour (at 4:30 am, when we should have been walking up to Machu Picchu) trying to get new tickets. In the end we also had to take a bus up to Machu Picchu so we would not miss the guided tour we had booked up in Machu Picchu. It was a huge trouble for us and a terrible start to the day we had been so excited for. When we went to complain the company basically told us things like this could always happen and there was nothing they could do for us.

This is one of the most amazing experiences of my life... camping in the clouds and hiking to one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, you get to appreciate how the Incas lived and how the actually made such amazing structures in the mountainous wildreness!

We should have known better not to do this trip. We originally wanted to go with Lorenzo who is highly recommended, he is a little more expensive but has the best safety gear of any tour. When we decided we wanted to go with him, he said the trip wasn't possible it was raining too much and there would be problems. We were quite headstrong about going and decided to book with the best of the worst, Reserv Cusco.

The owner, Arturo was nice and assured us it would be a great trip. My boyfriend and I only had 3 days so we chose the 3 day trip. Arturo also told us we would have an English speaking guide. Usually traveling, my boyfriend and I take the budget route so an English speaking guide was a luxury. We both know some Spanish and can definitely get by but for the price we were paying it was nice not to have to worry about a language barrier or thinking to much.

We left early in the morning on Feb 28. We shuttled with a couple other tour groups, they all had many people to one guide where we had one guide for the two of us. Unfortunately it went all downhill from here. On the way to the Abra Malaga pass we were stopped because there was a landslide on the other side and they didn't know when it would be cleared. The driver decided that we would go up there anyway. Not really thinking about it again, we launched the bikes and rode down for 45 minutes before we hit the landslide. The other companies decided to go back but we pleaded with our guide that we were only doing a 3-day and not a 4-day trip so we didn't have the luxury to go back and try again tomorrow. This was about the time we realized his English was poor at best, he was just agreeing with and didn't know what we were saying! Once we established that, we used our limited Spanish. We ditched the bikes, grabbed our bags and walked across the landslide with our guide. We talked to buses and one of them agreed to take us to town. Well long story short, there were several landslide we had to cross (usually on foot) and we spent the better part of the day pleading with people to take us to town. Finally we arrived at town and we had to pay for transport to the hostel. Not only did we pay for ourselves but our guide as well. The lunch and hot springs we were promised as part of the trip, ha that definitely didn't happen! We arrived at the hostel well after 9 starving, exhausted, and soaking wet. Once here we met our new guide (he took a couple the day before to do the 4-day trip) who had excellent English and quite a bit of experience with this route.

Our guide let us use his cell phone to talk to Arturo about our circumstances. We told him we were warned not to go up there and instead of a 5-hour bike ride, we got a 45 minute bike ride, no lunch, and no hot springs. This all could have been avoided but I am sure the bike companies knew they would have to refund money to turn back when we were first warned of the situation. Arturo was very polite and understanding, he said we would receive a partial refund and reimbursed for the expenses we had to get to the hostel. When we arrived back in Cusco, he was going to send someone over with our money.

The next day was a fresh start, albeit soaking boats and damp soaks (which is no fun on 22km hike) but we enjoyed it regardless. By the end of the day we were exhausted and excited to see Machu Picchu. It was spectacular, had no trouble getting there and transport back to Cusco. The following morning we waited around for our refund, we were told it would be delivered fist thing because we had a plane to catch to Lima. No one ever showed up and we had to get to the airport. If we had time, we would have definitely gone to the office but Arturo seemed like such a nice, trustworthy guy and we didn't think he would not come through.

If I had to do it over again, I would only go with Lorenzo or not at all. Safety should have been our first and only concern. The gear was in poor shape, ripped, straps didn't latch, and much too big for a girl. The bikes weren't much better, luckily my boyfriend worked in a mountain bike shop for years and tuned them up the best he could. I guess that doesn't matter so much since we only rode for 45 minutes. Walking across the landslides was absolutely terrifying, my parents would have killed me if they knew! Luckily the pictures we took did not do it justice...
