“With Uncover Latin America, Muy Excellente!!”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

We trekked in January and were so fortunate to have some clear days. We booked with Uncover Latin America, we were a group of 4 and we were all very please with the service we received during our trek. The journey to Machu Picchu is just magic, exotic surrounds, which start out being high mountain terrains and then you decend through some amazing lush tropical jungle. A great variety of landscapes and plants. Importantly the food on the trek was great, our 2 friends had the vegetarian menu, and Jonathon our guide did an excellent job. If I can offer any words of wisdom, book the trek at least 4 months in advance. Other words of wisdom and this is probably some of the best pieces of advice I can offer and it came from Chris who helped organize our trip for us - Bring not only toilet paper but also bring some wet wipes like what babies use. you are camping for 3 days. Other advice, this hike is quite physical, do stretching exercises just before you begin the trek, especially your ankles and calf muscles and back. We were lucky a private porter was included as part of our package which meant we were carry alot less of our personal belongings, this made a big difference.

We didnt do the hike up to Hyuana Picchu mountain and just as well, could barely walk by the end hahaha. We stayed at the Andina Luxury afterwards and we so over joyed that Uncover had organized a room with a jacuzzi, which I lay in for a good hour, followed by a massage in the village of Aguas Calientes. Machu Picchu was just incredible, a most rewarding experience.

“Andean Life Tour Operators”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

This past Christmas (2012) a group of us travelled to Peru to hike MP for a much needed vacation. As we planned this vacation we went online and looked for Tour Operators and stumbled upon Andean Life Adventure Tour Operators in Cusco City. We were in contact with William Amaru, who is the Manager and owner of the company. We paid for the following upfront: The Hike (which included food and water), Macchu Picchu entrance fee and bus, additional hike to the Summit of Macchu Picchu mountain, hotel in Aguas Calientes, train back to Ollantaytambo and taxi from Ollantaytambo to Cusco. At first William was a great operator, explaining the city’s amenities, explained his tour company and the trip we were about to embark! As we had limited time (2 weeks) in Peru and the hike would take up the bulk of the trip he told us about the Sacred Valley and the local market day trips that would positively add to our trip. Those day trips were great, we had the opportunity to see some great attractions and the landscape!
The guide Christian (not William) was amazing, helpful, energetic, knowledgeable and friendly. We spent 3 days hiking the Salkantay route. Once in we arrived in Aguas Calientes, there was some confusion as our accommodation was not arranged and we were told by our guide that William did not purchase our entrance tickets or the additional hike pass to MP Summit. The guide told us we would have to purchase these again and William would reimburse us upon our return to Cusco. Feeling stuck – we purchased additional tickets as stated above to complete our trip, trusting we would be paid back.
Once we entered the site (MP) – to say the site was amazing and spiritual is an understatement! We entered the site at 6:00am, after 3 days of 20km hikes each day, and proceeded to ‘start’ our tour. Christian was extremely knowledgeable about Macchu Picchu and explain the whole site and past of the Inca’s and the site. Once the tour and initial photos were completed and we were about to start the final hike to the summit of MP, Christian explained he had to go and that the train tickets would be available for pick up at the restaurant we had dinner the night before. Without questioning, we thanked Christian and started the final hike of our journey (so we thought)!
We arrived back in Aguas Calientes to pick up our train tickets and head back to Cusco. This is where the Company, Andean Life, failed! We arrived in at 2:00pm to pick up the train tickets that were for the 5:00pm train. We went to the restaurant and were told that Christian did not leave the tickets for the train. We were dumbfounded and now stranded in Aguas Calientes! We called William 10 times before we had to use our cell phone before he picked up and we explained the tickets were not there. William told us that it was his fault that he didn’t send Christian the tickets because of the mudslide and trains were being delayed (this turned out not to be a true reason as trains had been running successfully since noon) So we asked what train we were on if we had pre-booked tickets? William told us that we would have to purchase additional train tickets because the ones he purchased were for the following day and he would again reimburse us! The following day happened to be the same day we had a bus booked leaving from Cusco back to Lima. We got to the train station and the train was fully booked only tickets were for the next day. We called William and told him about the train so then asked for the confirmation number for the tickets he purchased – he would not tell us! So we booked a new train the next morning. Now we were stuck in AC for the night, we ran from hotel to hotel trying to find accommodations.
Finally we found a hotel to stay that had enough room for the group of us! We called William again explaining the hotel/train and taxi in Ollantaytambo situation, again he told us he would reimburse the hotel, train, entrance fee to Macchu Picchu and the extra hike cost to the summit of Macchu Picchu, but he would have a taxi waiting for us in Ollantaytambo to take us to Cusco and he would be waiting with our money. So far the total is this is over $550USD and we are not out of Aguas Calientes!
We boarded the train (Inca Rail – great company!) it was a great train experience, the taxi was waiting for us…we arrived back in Cusco – went to the location where William was supposed to be waiting – and NO William! We had a note and bus tickets explaining he was unable to wait for us and he would send the money to us in 3 days to our Lima Hotel. We called William numerous times – no answer! We emailed William – no reply! We couldn’t wait around Cusco for William as our bus tickets were non-transferable and non-refundable. William finally responded to our email telling us he would send the money and he was truly sorry for the mix up. We told him to send it to a Moneygram in Lima the day before we were to leave. NO MONEY showed up. We emailed William - he told us that he would send the money to Canada to us and for us not to write a review as he would lose business! Well it has been 2 months…we are waiting no longer! DO NOT BOOKED with ANDEAN LIFE – William Amaru is a scam and will steal your money! Pass this information along to everyone travelling to MP – use GAP Adventures instead! Andean Life is a terrible company with no standards for customer service.

“Absolutely Amazing”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

I deffinately recommend the Inca Trail. We did it as part of a G adventures tour. The food was amazing, three courses! The tent and rented sleeping bag and poles were practically brand new.
The guide was lovely and very informative. We did our tour in January and the weather wasn't that bad, a bit of rain but warm as the trek is hard work. I would suggest you do it in three days (we did) as it is a nice pace.
Book well in advance, not bother with expensive trekking boots (I did it in well worn running shoes), a waterproof/wind proof coat is a must! Hire at least one walking pole as the descending is quite steep and you really do need a pole.
The toilets are a bit grim, and there aren't any showers but that's all part of the fun :D !!
Absolutely breathtaking :)

“unforgettable experience”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

If you have a bit more time and happy to spend 3 nights in a tent without access to toilet or running water that is definatelly thing you should do. You need to book this trek at least 2months in advance as they have daily limit of the people entering Inca Trail. You need to bring warm clothes for cold nights and waterproof jackets for rainy days. We were there in June and everyday we had different weather:) I will never forget how satisfied and happy I was when finally on day four we entered the Sun Gate. The breathtaking view was definatelly worth all inconvenience during this trek. Truly recommend to everyone.

“G Adventures made my trip”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

I used G Adventures for the Inca Trail and it was the best decision ever. I'm neither a camper nor a hiker so the trip was quite daunting at first. The organisation and the passion of the tour leaders put me at ease immediately. What truly amazed me besides the absolute beauty on the trail were the delicious meals that were served 3 times a day - how the chef pulled it off is a mystery but greatly appreciated after a long day. Thank you G Adventures is was truly a memorable experience.
