Just visited Machu Picchu with my wife a few days ago. Took the Inca Trail to get there. It´s everything they say and more. My best advice would be to spend the night in Aguas Calientes, a charming little down at the base, and then wake up super early at like 5 am to catch a 6am shuttle to MP so that you get there right when it opens. It was a spiritual moment for me, and I´m not a particularly spiritual person. Again, get there EARLY. It gets packed by around 9 am, so your photo opps will be filled with tourists after that time. Oh, and remember that they have a little MP stamp for your passport at a kiosk just on your left right after you enter the ticket turnstile. Nice little treat.
