“Llamas at our tents”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2011

The Inca site at Puyapatamarca, set on a hillside among cloud forests at about 12,000 feet, is inspiring. The descent by way of Intipata and Winya Wayna to Machu Picchu is a great way to experience, in one day's hike, the magnificence of ancient Andean culture and architecture.

Views in every direction- just spectacular. It was amazing to have birds of prey circling below us.

“"City in the Clouds" Lives Up to it's Name!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2011

Phuyupatamarca is one of the Incan ruins sites that you pass as you hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. You'll pass it on the 3rd day of the usual 4 day Inca Trail Trek. You cannot access these ruins any other way, and hiking the Inca Trail requires a guide and a permit to be booked well in advance.

When we passed Phuyupatamarca, it was really living up to its name as "City in the Clouds". At over 11,000 feet the views of this place must be phenomenal when it's not socked in by clouds. It looks over seemingly endless cloud forest, all the way down to the river. You can clamber around on the ruins if you like. This looks like a really cool place even if we could only see a short ways because of the mist.
