After visiting some power places, we reach the part, that because of its placement and stone-works, has inspired all who have had the opportunity to see it. I am referring here to the Intiwatana and all that surrounds it. This stone structure is probably the most important of the sanctuary, because of its dimension and shape. Numerous interpretations have been made concerning the Intiwatanas and its use. Apart from the local folklore interpretations, I can assert “that our ancestors did not give priority to daily time control, such as the prolongation of fractions like the seconds of a clock, that are so necessary in our current complex life.”

...not for someone that has a fear of heights. I don't, but the gentleman that tried to get out of there clearly did have. For the rest of us, it is a very photographic location, and a nice spot within the Machu Picchu area in itself.

No disrespect. The Hitching Post of the Sun is magnificent. One huge stone, carved and carrying a huge significence. If you come at the right time of year, it is even more significent, Fortunately I was here before the are was roped off. Not so bad now that it is, but it does feel different.

The Hitching Post of the Sun is an iconic part of Michu Picchu. And it has wonderful views of the sanctuary and the surrounding area.

Located just a few minutes from the Sacred Temple, the Intihuatana stone is carved out of the natural pyramid that was the highest point in the Machu Picchu ruins. There is a very impressive staircase leading to the top of the pyramid, with the stone easily found at the center. The role of the stone is a bit debated by Western scholars but there seems to be a general consensus that it was involved in some fashion in important religious ceremonies.

The guide book I used for the trip describes the stone as "an elegant and multifaceted stone masterpiece of exceptional elegance and beauty." I would agree with this statement, but unfortunately as this is also the highest point in the urban sector you have to share this sentiment with oodles of other tourists. In retrospect I wish I would have visited at off-peak hours (probably 6-7AM and 3-5PM) for a more realistic experience. In any case, a visit to Machu Picchu can't realistically be called complete without at least passing by here to appreciate the craftsmanship.
