We did the one day Inca Trail. During the trek we could see Winawayna high up in the mountain in the distance. Little did we know that this was our destination for lunch!

The views from Winawayna whilst lunching were awesome and it was quite surprising to see how far and how high we had come to be there.

I believe that Winawayna can only be reached by foot whilst on one of the Inca Trails to Machu Picchu, but it is another reason that makes the trek worth while.

Well preserved Inca ruin where we stopped for lunch on our one day Inca trail walk to Machu Picchu. Unless you back track on the 4 day Inca trail walk, you will miss this lovely site, just around the corner from a beautiful cooling waterfall. A site that can only be seen by walking to it.

Of all the Inca Cities, Winawayna is the most impressive after Machu Picchu. There must be 15 Inca Cities on the Four Day Inca Trail, but they are smaller and not as impressive. I think that when in Inca Trail, in some ways, Winawayna rewards you more than the actual Machu Picchu Citadel. This is because you are working your way to Winawayna all along and that is the first big Inca City you get to see where you will find nobody besides yourself and the birds.
