First of all keep in mind this is a lodge in a very special location, it`s like having your own cabin in Machu Picchu along with ver helpful and kind staff.. sounds good to me.

The subject for this review means that when you want to go and see the sunrise in Machu Picchu you just have to step out of your room and not take a long bus (20 mins) from Aguas Calientes, (closest town).. then you can get back to your room, have a great breakfast, maybe rest an hour in your room and then take a private tour thru Machu Picchu, again, just stepping out of your room..then you can relax in the jacuzzi, have a massage or just spend the afternoon in Machu Picchu maybe see the sun set.. raining maybe? no problem your suite is right there go to the bar and have a drink, when rain stops, time to step in Machu Picchu again.... this scenario vs the one that you have to wake up at 4:30 am take the bus, go up, see the sunrise take a tour and go back down to you hotel in the bus, for me makes a different experience.

Keep in mind rooms are small because is a lodge.. staff is always kind and helpful.. they are remodeling some rooms and this is an important improvement already taking place.

Room Tip: Keep in mind check out is at 11:00am so don´t buy a very late train return to Cusco or where your ne...

Did not know what to expect, but we were blown away by how awesome the hotel/lodge was. Everything was included, even the mini-bar. We had a great time at the 1.5 hour Pisco tasting. Was so cool to wake up early in the morning and walk over to Machu Picchu ruins and walk around before the daily tourists. If you are going to go to Machu Picchu this is the place to stay. We also enjoyed the hot tub overlooking the Machu Picchu ruins.

We spent one night here and were glad we did despite the cost. The benefit of being right at Machu Pichhu is definitely worth the cost. On our first afternoon we were about the last ones to leave the site and virtually had it to ourselves. The next morning we were there early and again avoided the big crush of tourists. Machu Picchu itself is totally amazing and one of the most awesome sites I have seen anywhere in this world. Being right there we were able to go back and forth to the hotel which was particularly convenient when it rained. We had a terrace room at the hotel and enjoyed using the terrace. The room itself was fine but not 5 star. They have done all they can with it though and it was comfortable enough. Where the hotel excelled were in the other important categories. The staff were wonderful and couldn't have done more for us. The meals were also quite good and everything is included in the rate. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine from room service on our terrace prior to dinner. The hotel has beautiful grounds including an amazing orchid collection. As we booked through the AMEX Fine Hotels program we were able to get a late check out which allowed us to enjoy our room till our bus for our train departed. If you can swing the high tariff this is definitely the place to stay.

Obviously, a great location and the staff is wonderful. Otherwise, perhaps resting on past laurels. But, location is everything and this is it. Would stay again but hope the kitchen reconsiders the overnight (or longer) guests as opposed to the HB trekkers.

Room Tip: Ask for a terrace.

we stayed for one night. since we were 3, they upgraded us to the presidential suite at very little extra cost. The food, service and accomodations were fabulous. They have an open air jacuzzi with views of Hayna Picchu and partial view of the ruins. They arranged for porter services for our luggage to be picked up at the train station and also to be dropped off. Meals are expensive but the serving size is generous. There are no other options for lunch at the ruins unless you take packed lunches from Agua Calientes. They also have a day room where you can freshen up after visiting the ruins (after check out). Would recommend staying here than in Agua Calientes which is only slightly less expensive. Also you can visit the ruins twice on 2 consecutive days.

Room Tip: select the presidential suite if you can get a good rate

If this is your one and only time to get to Machu Picchu, then consider treating yourself to the convenience of the Sanctuary Lodge. If you get bus sick and want to go to Machu Picchu more than once, definitely save yourself 2 trips up and down the mountain by bus.
We stayed there two nights so that we were ahead of the buses that come up from Aguas Calientes at 6:00 in the morning and were among the first in to the park. Wonderful to see it without other tourists running around. A special treat was to get there as they let the llamas out of their houses for the day.

The lodge itself has very small rooms, but you are paying for location. The dining room was very accommodating with the chef taking good care of 6 vegans who ate 5 meals there. We also enjoyed the spa with a view of Huanna Pucchu and the terraces in the park.

See my other review because we also spent a night in Aguas Calientes at the Inkaterra Pueblo.

Room Tip: The Terrace Rooms the most expensive. They are smaller than what you would expect for the price, but...

I was a little nervous about booking the Hiram Bingham package with Orient Express. It was a definite splurge and the reviews here and elsewhere made me worry that I was being a sucker. I'm glad I followed my instinct and wasn't too swayed by the poor reviews The package included 2 nights hotel, meals, drinks (except premium liquor), round trip fare on the Hiram Bingham train (reviewed separately), one day entrance to Machu Picchu citadel and a guided tour of the ruins.

Although the package was listed on the website, I had to email the Orient Express (now "Belmond") reservations group in Peru directly for pricing and availability. They have to coordinate with Perurail for the train tickets. Here's the tough part: You have to prepay 100% at the time of booking and the package is nonrefundable. That was a little scary and one of the few things that could have prompted me to pay for trip insurance.

I read reviews that complained that the hotel was priced like a 5 star resort but did not look and feel like such. That's true, if you ignore one thing: The hotel sits at the entrance gate to Machu Picchu, inside a UNESCO world heritage site. You can wake up, climb a mountain, then stroll back to your hotel for lunch. After lunch and a rest, you can go back into the ruins for a leisurly stroll through. When you're done for the day, you can soak in a hot tub surrounded by an orchid and herb garden while gazing at Huayna Picchu before dinner and drinks. You definitely pay a preimium for the experience.

Yes, the rooms are very small (especially the bathrooms) but they were in good shape, comfortable and very clean - nice beds and linens, etc. Based on the reviews we read before booking, I requested a Superior room, which faces the courtyard. I'm very glad I did. When you read about the hotel and it says that the hotel is "very close" to the entrance, they are not kidding: The hotel and the entrance are physically connected. Buses start coming up from Aguas Calientes before dawn and even at the opposite side of the hotel you can hear them with the windows open. Our room had a terrace and very nice view, even if it wasn't a "Mountain View" room.

The grounds are beautiful on the courtyard side. There's an herb and orchid garden, a huge hot tub with a view and a quiet courtyard. There's not much to the interior of the hotel except the guest rooms, two massage rooms, two restaurants and the lobby. The main restaurant is used for both breakfast (buffet or a la carte) and dinner (a la carte). The second dining room is used for afternoon tea served to Hiram Bingham passengers. The food is great - everything is very fresh and well prepared with local ingredients.

The staff was fantastic - they were welcoming and genuinely very friendly. I get the impression that they have a fairly demanding clientele (based both on what I witnessed while at the hotel, and the reviews here) and you can tell that the guests keep the staff busy. Despite that, the staff was always warm, helpful and professional - especially the restaurant staff. They were wonderful.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room on the courtyard side of the hotel, away from the Machu Picchu entrance...

While most visitors to the citadel endure a winding bus ride from Aguas Calientes, our snug retreat is a few footsteps away. Wake before sunrise and be the first through the gates. The mountains look magnificent emerging from a thick cloak of mist, and Machu Picchu is stunning in solitude. Stop, breathe and soak it all in. ... more   less
