Location, location, location! We felt privileged to be steps from Machu Picchu ruins. We visited the ruins 2 days in a row. The Sanctuary was a lovely mountain top retreat with beautiful gardens and views. Our suite was spaceous with custom linens and a lovely patio. If only we had more time to enjoy that hot tub... We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast, lunch & dinner.
The staff were extremely accomodating.

We stayed here in July 2012 after trekking through the forest for 4 days to get to Machu Picchu's citadel. As said, it is the only option at the mountain top. The prices are quite high (quite!), but you have to consider what you are getting: a stay at only a handful of rooms immediately outside the citadel, with all food and drinks included. It is a very popular tourist location, so having a comfortable room, hot shower, peace and quiet, plus free flowing meals only a few steps away is awesome. Everyone else has to queue for fast food, public toilets, and the long bus ride back to their hotels at the base of the mountain.
The room was not large, but it was comfortable, modern, clean, and the views are majestic. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The food selection was varied and the preparation was appetizing. You are paying for convenience, a unique location and you get great meals in the bargain.
It is isolating and that cuts both ways. You get the luxury of privacy after the crowds recede at this mountaintop oasis; but you are completely insulated from the locals, and the modern cultural influences you might encounter back in town.
If you are going to come to the citadel, this is the most opulent alternative.

Room Tip: Again, not all rooms are created (nor priced) equally. Those with the best views are more expensive...

As you've probably read, the price for this hotel is quite high but I would highly recommend staying here if you have the means to do so.

Firstly, the convenience offered by being situated literally next to the site entrance. This allows you to come and go as you please and to also stay back after all the crowds have had to go home. For us, this was the main reason to stay here. Having arrived after 4 days on the Inca Trail, we also wanted to stay at a luxurious destination to recover. (e.g. we could leave all our baggage when we first arrived at the hotel then go back out)

Secondly, the price is all inclusive of food and drinks (including wine etc). The food standard and quantity are very good so be sure to make the most of it. While I think the prices on the menu are too high for walk-in customers, it still nonetheless offers decent value for guests staying there.

The rooms themselves are relatively plain considering it is part of Orient-Express but they are clean and roomy, and ours had a courtyard where we could view Wayna Picchu.

On the day of check-out, I climbed Wayna Picchu and being able to use the change rooms and showers afterwards was a very nice thing to have.

If you can factor this as part of the cost to come to Machu Picchu, I would highly recommend staying here.

Expensive but worth it for convenience. Although rooms are small, they are modernly appointed and have a peaceful, zen quality. Service at both front desk and cafe were good. Food in cafe was not "great" but still good enough. Such a plus to not have to ride down the mountain and up again the next day by bus...simply walk out the lodge and onto Machu Picchu at sunrise (or any other time of the day). STAYED HERE IN NOV 2008.

[I know I'm posting this years later, but today I decided to finally contribute to Tripadvisor being that I so often benefit from Tripadvisor comments].

This is clearly a case of raping a captive market.
It is the only hotel right next to the ruins. The rest all being in Aguas Calientes, half an hour bus trip down the mountain.
The lack of competition has resulted in what I consider to be an average hotel, with average facilities, average rooms (we had the "best suite in the hotel"...apparently!!), average restaurant, average food and average service with 6 star prices!! NOTHING like one would expect from Orient Express particularly considering the faultless nature of the Monasterio in Cusco.
The location is superb however the bureacracy and arrogance of the staff managing the neighbouring ruins definitely impacts negatively on the experience.
OE needs to up the game on this property and have closer ties with the management of the ruins for the benefit of its guests.

Dear guest,

Thank you for helping us to improve our services with your comments. The commitment of Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge is to give the best to our guests and your overall impressions about your stay in our property are very important to us.

Based on our regular’s guest’s comments, their experiences may be very different from yours but, however, it is good to know the reasons why we couldn’t achieve your expectations, so we can take special attention to each one.

Indeed, we agree that a relation with the governmental department that is directing the entrance to the Citadel is much bureaucratized and unfortunately this problem is beyond our control. However, I want to let you know that we work closely on implementing a system that will give the hotel more autonomy to purchase late minute Citadel entrance ticket for our guests. We are confident to obtain giving more flexible concerning this aspect to make our guests last minute ticket purchase a simple formality.

Hotels located in in the town of Aguascalientes, none of them offer the privilege to overnight nestle in the flank of Machu Picchu Citadel. Also, in the case you overnight in town, the for concerning prices none, our hotel is an all-inclusive and offer the privilege to overnight on a platform of the Citadel when our guests do not suffer any noise disturbance from evening to morning as they overnight “alone” in this Sanctuary. Also, in the case you overnight in town, you may suffer from the noise a town generate until late at night, also the time consumed by the bus trip means that between the line to purchase your bus ticket, the queue to get to the bus, the half an hour trip to get from the town to the Citadel, all round trip take away an average of two hours on your visit of Machu Picchu Citadel. Also, staying in our property offers to our guests the freedom to enter and exit the Citadel as many times as they wish during the day in order to lunch, refresh or rest for a while before to continue the discovery of Machu Picchu.

We deeply value your comments and apologize if we didn´t meet your expectations. We can guaranty you of our permanent commitment in keeping on with all the efforts and focus, reinforcing our renowned service quality with the firm determination to always correspond to the great treatment that our Trip Advisor reviewers always rank.

Sanctuary Lodge is perfectly located next to the gates of Machu Picchu. All other properties are located 25 minutes down the mountain in the town of Agua Caliente.

We paid $1198 for 1 night and read enough reviews on Trip Advisor to know what we were getting. The room was overly small and reminded us of a 1970's motel. It needs renovations but when most people only stay one night, it is sufficient.

All meals are included, including alchohol, which for non-drinkers like us, was a disadvantage. The restaurant is excellent in all ways - food divine and servers that cater to the customers. The mini bar is also free which is a nice touch.

Although the service in the restaurant was excellent, we had a few issues with the front desk. We made three minor requests and two of the requests went unanswered....no word, update, nothing. This is not the service we expected and when reported to our travel agent, an Orient Express Manager in the US sent us a nice email and credited us for a portion of our stay.

I applaud Management's wilingness to rectify the situation.

All in all, it is worth splurging one night to experience Machu Picchu up close and personal. And make sure you get up early to enter the gate at 6AM for a sunrise experience.

If you want to climb Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (inside Machu Picchu/one hour climb to the top), you need to get tickets in advance. We did not know this and were disappointed the climbs were sold out. They only allow 400 people a day. According to others, if you are afraid of heights, do not climb Wayna Picchu as there are narrow paths and trecherous sections.

You also need advance tickets to enter Machu Picchu and expect crowds (especially on Sundays as locals are free). And bring your rain gear as it rains often.

If you want to use the outside jacuzzi, you need to make a reservation as it only fits 7 people.

Enjoy!
