“Stay clear of this hotel .... VERY awful !”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

We're just back from a one night stay at this hotel and I very much advise to stay away from it. First of all it's Lonely Planet recommended as central location but it took us up to an hour to walk into Plaza del Armas from it so it's very not central. The rooms were dull, dark, grey, dirty carpets, dirty walls and just not welcoming. Restaurant staff were so rude unwilling to speak english. After a long flight, they couldn't make us up a sandwich and wanted us to order a 5 course set lunch which we didn't want so we left and went elsewhere to eat. Then for breakfast the next morning, they only had cinnamon teabags and it was "take it or leave it but please don't be disrupting my day". Very overpriced bedrooms and reception staff not so friendly either. Advice .... go elsewhere where they appreciate your hard earned cash.

Lovely place, nice breakfast, staff could be nicer.
Clean, secure and quite, even with a school in the backyard ;)
For a short term stay its nice.
I was alone and there's not so many things to do nearby.

I chose this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews and didn't regret. It is a really nice hotel in downtown Lima, but in a very quiet street. The furniture is kind of old, but very clean and everything worked. Like the other reviews, the weak point is the "breakfast"; basically bread, butter, jelly, coffee and juice. But the employees are very polite and gave several tips for sightseeing.

We arrived in Lima for a 2.5 week trip, and since we hadn't heard back from the hotel regarding transportation, assumed (unlike other reviews) that it wasn't included. We arrived at the hotel after 20 hr. of flying and just wanted water. We asked at the desk, tipped for the water, only to find out at check out (unlike every other hotel we stayed at in Peru, and not mentioned when asking for water) that we owed S 3.5 each. Just sort of set the tone for the stay. The hotel was also supposed to arrange a taxi at 2am for our 5am departure flight, and we awoke in the morning to the clerk having no idea of this. She said they couldn't give us a ride b/c we made reservations on Otels.com vs. their website, and further, hadn't called for our cab yet. Finally we left... knowing our last 2 nights of the trip were also reserved at this hotel. Due to little internet access while trekking we decided to give the hotel another chance - figuring we would hardly be there. Upon our arrival the second time, there seemed to be a lot of confusion over which room to give us as we waited around after a long day of flying again. And as another reviewer pointed out, if you tried to speak english, they indeed looked like you were speaking chinese. We stayed in another, very large room, but the carpets were disgusting and dirty. Honestly, they should also clean or shampoo the carpets, especially on the stairs leading to the rooms. It sets the atmosphere for the care that is taken. Overall, we stayed at the hotel as little as possible, arranged our own transportation to the airport this time (for $10 cheaper, which we applied to the driver's tip). However, we received a call at 2am the morning we were leaving telling us we had to pay our bill before leaving -- only to find out that yes, we had already paid, it was the hotel's mistake, but worrying us that we needed to get more cash out at 2am. While this hotel is in a quiet location, and within a fair walking distance to central Lima, all of this inconvenience and the lack of hospitality set the tone for our stay. It was the worst hotel we stayed at in Peru and we dreaded sleeping there. Also, speaking of sleeping, the pillow cases (at the least) could use some rejuvenation or bleaching.

A comfortable, quiet and clean hotel within walking distance (20-30 minutes) of the historic sites. Hotel staff was kind and very helpful. Hotel is on a quiet cul-de-sac. Some noise in distance, but it did not bother us. We were mainly interested in seeing the Plaza de Armas area and being in a safe, downtown environment. We took taxis to Miraflores for dinner. I would return to the Clifford in similar circumstances and recommend it warmly.

Pros - location, value, service, breakfast, security, endless hot water.
Cons - can be noisy, needs new rugs, beds just OK, not many restaurant options without a taxi.

Get a room in the old building if noise bothers you. The old part faces a quiet area. The new wing which is modern and not as interesting faces a school and car alarms go off all night. Closing the windows helps. Ask for eggs at breakfast - there was no extra charge. My Peruvian girlfriend told me to NOT make a reservation online so we saved 18% tax.

Room Tip: stay in old section. 202 was a nice room with a nice view.

We found the Clifford through Trip Advisor and were very please with our choice. There were only two problems, one of which is addressed in the "choose a good room" section below. The other is that the Clifford, a beautiful old mansion to which a modern wing has been added at the back, is located on a circle that taxi drivers have difficulty finding. My advice: print out a Mapquest map showing the circle with hotel marked and surrounding streets and keep it with you if you are using taxis. The circle is near a major thoroughfare but many drivers simply don't know the circle exists.

That said, we enjoyed our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful; a full breakfast was offered every morning, and our room was one of the largest we have ever stay in. We would certainly return.

Room Tip: Rooms that overlook the street at the back of the hotel may get a lot of noise in the morning as the...
