“Splendid exterior. Ancient interior.”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Must have been really splendid when it opened in 1924.
Unfortunately the interior appears not to have been updated since then.
Very old fittings and truly tired decor.Bed creaky and very hard.Doorlock in bedroom utterly inadequate and worrying.Plumbing functional but noisy and erratic.
Lobby recalls a better past. 1920's car parked here:this seems appropiate.
Not recommended. Go to Miraflores instead.

Stayed a couple of nights at the end of a 3 week trip, thought it would be worth the extra money for an upscale hotel but was a bit disappointed. The hotel is historic but needs a bit of upgrading, the restaurant and bar staff were really slow. however I did enjoy the charm of the place, and it's in a very good area, near the Plaza des Armas. The rooms are large but fairly basic.

Room Tip: I think the higher the floor, the quieter it might be

We picked this place on a whim as opposed to a more casual hotel that we'd normally have stayed at. While slightly more expensive than the typical hotel in the downtown area, it's not that much higher, and even just the feeling when walking into the beautiful lobby was a nice plus. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The rooms are large and quite nicely appointed. The only negatives we had were that the beds are hard as a rock - much like a board with a thin pad over them, and that our first room, on the outer side of the hotel, was so inundated with 24 hour a day traffic noise from the street that after one night we asked to move to an interior room - far nicer, even if lacking a view of the plaza or street.

Room Tip: Interior rooms don't get hammered by all night street noise.

Due to baggage issues at the airport and a very early morning flight the next day, my family of five and I only had to spend 4hours at this poor excuse of a hotel. Outside of our bedroom window was a very traffic heavy street and traffic was loud while we were there. But more disturbing than the traffic was the exhaust fumes from the traffic that came in through the windows, some of which didn't have glass panes in them. The bathroom was disgusting. I forbade my three sons and husband from stepping foot in the shower for fear they would contract illnesses from the filthy shower floor. Never mind the fact that there were no towels. The sink and toilet were not much better. The beds were miserably hard and squeaky. I slept on top of the bed, fearing what was lurking under the sheets. I was thankful we had to spend so little time at this horrible hotel .

Considering everything, this hotel is a five-star buy for three-star money. It is in a good location in an elegant old building that does not offer all the modern amenities like pool or hair driers. The facility if famous, clean, has firm beds and hot water and an English-speaking staff. A visitor easily gets the feeling of previous luxury. A good breakfast is included in the price.

Spent 5 nights in this hotel. It is a beautiful building full of history and character and the central dome is stunning. Unfortunately, the beds are rock hard, hot water was almost non existant and the service was ordinary. We had one meal which was quite good so went back to the restaurant a second time and the food was inedible. Breakfast was extremely dissapointing and you simply couldnt get the staff to bring what you asked for or to bring anything at all.
Dodge Saturday night if you want to stay, weddings on the ground floor are apparently popular but they go till 4 in the morning so recommend you wedding crash, you might as well because you wont get to sleep!

Room Tip: Ask for an internal room, not one over the street

I've experienced in El Gran Hotel Bolivar the worst service ever.
The hotel is really old, and neglected.
We've waited for one hour to get dinner, and food arrived cold! The waiter's excuse : "The kitchen is far"... The staff doesn't pay any attention to his customers, we had to go get them each time we needed something.
The icing on the cake : somebody had repainted the bathroom with vomit, and nobody came cleaning.
Don't go there, ever!
