“Place with a soul”

This was a very interesting hotel.
It had a lot of character.
Old, not in the greatest shape, but everything was clean.
Service was very helpful.
Food was OK.
Being in the best location in the central Lima was a huge plus.
Realistically, this is a 4 star place, not five. But, 3 nights that we have stayed there, felt like living in a different time and that was priceless.

I only stayed here for one night, but loved every minute of it.

Personally, I really love historic sites, and it was especially cool to stay at a hotel that people like Clark Gable and Mick Jagger stayed at. As if the outside of the building wasn't beautiful enough, the inside was truly grand. All of the furniture, at least in the rooms, was antique. I really felt like I was stepping into another century... the ceilings are so high and elegant. I felt a bit glamorous walking into our room!

The hot water is strong and you are never without. The beds were comfortable, on the firmer side, and there is tons of space to put your luggage and lounge. The bathrooms are very large, which is also nice.

As for the staff, they were all very attentive and nice. Very helpful when trying to get to certain districts that are a bit more unknown. They helped us look up restaurants and find cabs that knew how to get there. They also hooked us up with a city tour just within a half hour of arriving in Lima.

The restaurant had DELICIOUS food... just on the pricier side. I didn't have a Pisco Sour there unforunately, but this hotel is its birth place so I would definitely try it while there. The staff at the restaurant were also incredibly nice and helpful.

The one and only downside is the very loud traffic that never stops all night and early morning. We had a room that overlooked a side street, so I would recommend avoiding that. Some would say this hotel is too far from the tourist attractions, but if you sign up for a tour they will come pick you up at the hotel. It is hard to get anywhere at night, which is why we opted to eat at the hotel instead.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel over and over again. For the price (a mere $86/night), you get to experience history almost as it was when it opened in the 1920s, architecturally speaking. You really can't go wrong. I wouldn't have spent $300 at the Sheraton knowing I could stay at this exquisite hotel.

Despite all the care and attention lavished on polishing the brass works, marble and wooden floors and vacuuming threadbare carpets, the mood in this grand old dame is melancholy, almost to the point of gloomy. This matches the demeanour of most of the staff, even taking into account the language barrier. Seemingly the only staff with a spontaneous smile or 'ola' are the guys making up the rooms !

The rooms are large and cleaned well, but with a very spartan in fit out and exceedingly basic beds and worn out and 'grey' bed linen and towels. The bathrooms are possibly original from the 20's, with tired and broken fittings. My curtains had crumbling linings.

The restaurant has obviously received some of the investment sadly lacking in the rest of the hotel, and is the only area in the hotel with any atmosphere, being patronised by both well heeled local clientele as well as tourists alike. The Pisco Sours are good as is the food.

Unless you can sleep though a cacophony of traffic noise avoid a room overlooking the street/plaza at all costs - the hooting, honking and sirens continue well into the early hours and start up again at about 0530 !

Having said all this - the room rates are very low and perhaps reflect the lack of much needed investment in renovations over what must be decades......what a pity - I'd have willingly paid more for a grand old dame hotel with some warmth and atmosphere.

Room Tip: Avoid those facing the street or plaza !

This must have been an incredible hotel in its heydey but still offers charming settings. If you want to stay in old Lima...this is it. One could not build a hotel like this today.....spacious rooms with large bathrooms, marble floors and pillars, 30 foot ceilings with crystal chandeliers, ornate french plaster designs, and balconies off your room. The bar downstairs is always lively with locals and tourists and and has a nice terraza area. The only downside to the hotel is that it is somewhat outdated and needs updating. but that adds to the charm. for example....one cannot take a long hot shower. The sfaff is very accomodating.

very popular bar for the locals, very prompt service, menu choices good and the Pisco Sours are to die for. Went on Friday evening and the place was pumping. In downtown Lima lots of locals enjoying the nice evening conditions.

Room Tip: Pisco Sour cost was 10 sols = $5

Our group stayed in two rooms, one facing the street, the other facing a courtyard. The room facing the street was extremely noisy due to partying going on in the street (til 4 AM), the other room was quite. The hotel had a nice breakfast and the rooms were very large, but mattresses were old and hard. Our room facing the street had terrific views of the plaza, but the street noise through the night wasn't worth it.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from street

This is a historic hotel in the middle of historical center, which is a very good location. You will be impressed pour le façade and its interior, very elegant and chic. However, the air conditioning inside the rooms do not work at all. The price is reasonable.
