“History and religion”

The place is a fantastic and awe inspiring combination of caves and libraries. The library has a good collection though the area lacks proper maintenance. The caves and the catacombs were very intriguing. The display of human parts in the glass cases was a bit chilling though. However the history of the place says that there was a graveyard here so maybe it was a memento of that time. The church has a strong and sturdy architecture maybe because it was made to withstand earthquakes and other such natural disasters.

“Cool Catacombs!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

The Church Of San Francisco is a very beautiful convent with lots interesting paintings, catacombs, and a library that contains over 25,000 books as far back as the 15th century. I found the Catacombs very cool, but also creepy down there..there are about 15,000 bones collected there in an amazing array of work. We took a tour of the Church and it was well worth the $7 entry fee...I thought I might be bored with just another old Church, but this was very interesting and well worth a visit...

This is a fantastically beautiful site (cathedral, monastery) with an incredible collection of colonial paintings and ceramic mosaics, and unbelievable wood carvings, Also houses an important colonial era monastic library and crypt full of bones. There is a huge amount to see but for better of worse one is forced to visit on a guided tour that moves along at a rather alarmingly fast click. The tour guide was informative but rather lack luster. But still--Church of San Francisco is well worth a visit.

“Needs work”

The library here tells the story, a huge range of books which look as they are almost all turning to dust. Although visitors are required to stand behind a restraining rope there appears to be little or no effort to save what must be a superb and valuable collection of books. Having seen this it makes you realise that the entire place is falling to pieces. A great shame when comparing with the Dominican Monastery.

“Very interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2014

The building was constructed to withstand the ever present threat of earthquakes and when you get to the second floor you can really see the way it has warped but not given up. The catacombs were a bit grisly for our taste but overall it is a piece of history not to be missed.
