“Cloudy day”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

I really enjoy the plaza de armas, but the day was not the best. The day was very cloudy and it was rainning. I hope to come again to peru and be able to visit the plaza de armas in a sunny day.

“Where it all Began”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

This is where it all began. The North side is taken up with the Government Palace, first erected by Pizarro and expanded many times since. It is now the residence of the President. At the NE corner is an attractive building notable for its colonial-era balconies, the Casa del Oidor. Two buildings occupy the East side: The Palace of the Archbishop, and the Cathedral. The latter holds the tomb of Pizarro and has suffered substantial earthquake damage over the centuries. The West side is occupied by two large yellow buildings with traditional-style balconies, and two make up the South side: City Hall, and the Club of the Union that serves as a social centre mainly for the Military. The most notable item in the centre is a large fountain, replacing its predecessor that in turn substituted for the gallows originally occupying the spot. Like so much of Lima, the square and its component buildings are somewhat dowdy, but the whole area is relaxed and quite attractive. It forms an interesting contrast with the other significant square we visited in Lima: Plaza San Martin, that is much more modern and commercial, matching the dignity of a capital city, but lacking the historic buildings to be found in its competitor.

“Worth it!”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

It was only a short stroll through the shopping street from our hotel (Gran Bolivar) and we enjoyed it. The plaza had some very beautifull buildings surrounding it e.g. the cathedral and the palace. Also the buildings with the wooden balconies were a joy to watch. The gardens were colourfull and very well maintained.
