“Must visit while you are in Lima”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Lima Cathedral and Palacio de Gobierno are must-sees in the Plaza de Armas. We saw the band and 'changing of the guards' at the Palace which was excellent. Just round the corner is San Francisco which is another must see whilst in Lima central. It is a lovely plaza with the fountain and many benches where you can just sit and take it all in. Restaurants and shops surround it, so lots to do.

“Colonial Lima started here”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

This is the place that Lima was established as the capital of New Spain in the 1500's. An old fountain over 300 years old is the star of the plaza. It seems that all of Lima meets here.

“A good place to spend a few hours”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

The major attractions around Plaza de Armas are the Palacio de Gobierno and Lima Cathedral. Nearby is the San Francisco convent.
we walked around these sights for some time, saw the 'changing of the guards' at the Palacio Gobierno (daily, around 11:30am) and then took the pedestrian-only Jr. de la Union to San Martin square/Plaza San Martin. There are a myriad of eating/shopping options in the streets around the plaza and along Jr. de la Union.

“Grey centre in a grey city”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

Didn't really have a lot to offer the tourist, not helped by the grey skies. There are a lot of people around but I'm not sure why. I wouldn't make a special effort to visit.

Plaza de Armas now known as Plaza Mayor, like in Spain due the colonial past of Peru, is a wonderful place to visit with the government palace that used to be in the colonial times the capital of the Spanish colony in South America and the cathedral
