My wife, 12 year old son and I spent two very pleasant nights at the Miraflores Park Hotel in June, 2009. This is a very well run hotel.
We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was a large single room. Our son’s twin bed fit nicely into a corner of the room – and the room was large enough that it almost seemed like the bed belonged there. We had a very comfortable and large sofa as well as a comfortable easy chair. Lighting was excellent, both at the bed and at the sofa and easy chair. The furniture and fittings of the room were deluxe. Our king sized bed was wonderfully comfortable.
Our bathroom consisted of four rooms. The first held an enormous roman tub (the room had shutters that opened to the bedroom) and the closet/storage space. The second had two sinks and room for dressing. The third was a dry sauna. And the fourth held the shower stall, a bidet and the toilet. All the fixtures were of very high quality.
The views of the room were to the neighborhood.
The hotel is located in the Miraflores part of Lima – one of the more upscale parts of the city. Since we were there in Peru’s winter, by and large the sky was overcast, and we had a drizzle on the day of arrival. The surrounding area was comfortable, in a South American large city kind of way (meaning lots of evidence of security – fences, alarms, etc.). We never felt unsafe in the vicinity of the hotel (or anywhere in Lima, for that matter).
The hotel is serviced by an array of black Mercedes which substitute for taxis. As a result, they are (i) much nicer than the typical Lima taxi and (ii) very much more expensive. We were generally too lazy to walk to the nearby shopping center to hail a regular taxi, so spent more than we needed on transportation. But, if you are price sensitive, you may want to avoid the house transportation.
Breakfast is served at a rooftop restaurant, with walls of glass. Thus, it meets my criteria for a splendid location for breakfast. There is a buffet (which was included in the room price), which was extensive and very good. All of the staff were pleasant and friendly.
The concierge desk provided excellent service – even going out of the way to do an introduction to the hotel manager. All of the staff everywhere in the hotel were clearly well trained in service and evinced an attitude of doing what it would take to please the hotel’s guests.
On our first night, tired due to the overnight flight the night before, we were in bed by 10:00pm. That night, much of Lima suffered a power outage for several hours starting at 11:00pm. We, of course, slept through it. The next morning, one would have thought that the hotel itself had caused the outage, based upon the level of apologies and concern evinced by the management and concierge desk.
My wife and son enjoyed swimming in the hotel’s rooftop pool both days of our stay.
This is superb hotel, for any city, anywhere in the world. The difference is the Orient Express staff and management, who understand service. I highly recommend the Miraflores Park Hotel.
